Data Visualization Software Engineer
Job Description
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is hiring a software engineering professional to build data-visualization and user-interface capabilities for ASD Scorpius. The work connects data-recall systems, databases, and accelerator controls, and supports development through integration and commissioning on-site in Livermore, CA.
Role Overview
This software engineering position supports the development of innovative applications for ASD Scorpius, a next-generation linear induction accelerator designed to produce multiple, precisely timed, high-energy X-ray images during subcritical experiments. The role focuses on creating intuitive visualization and interface workflows that help users access complex engineering and experimental data.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain software applications and graphical user interfaces for visualization, retrieval, and presentation of engineering and experimental data.
- Implement well-defined software features that interface with data sources, databases, application programming interfaces (APIs), and controls-related software.
- Apply fundamental software engineering concepts, techniques, practices, and procedures using standard development methodologies to solve assigned problems.
- Develop software components using appropriate programming languages, frameworks, and development tools aligned with project requirements and coding practices.
- Implement data-processing and data-recall functionality to enable efficient access to engineering and experimental information.
- Develop and execute unit, integration, and automated tests to validate functionality, identify defects, and support reliable operation.
- Participate in software design discussions, code reviews, configuration management, documentation, and other established software-development lifecycle activities.
- Collaborate with engineers, scientists, software developers, and project personnel to understand requirements, communicate technical progress, and integrate software components into larger engineering systems.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related science, engineering, or technical field, or equivalent demonstrated knowledge.

- Fundamental knowledge and experience applying one or more modern programming languages such as Python, Java, Kotlin, C/C++, C#, JavaScript/TypeScript, or similar languages.
- Knowledge of developing software applications that interact with databases, structured data, APIs, or other software services.
- Knowledge of graphical user interface, web application, or data-visualization development concepts and techniques.
- Experience using standard software-development tools and practices such as version control, testing, debugging, and collaborative workflows.
- Experience applying technical principles, theories, concepts, and techniques to well-defined software-development problems.
- Sufficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively and present technical information.
- Experience developing graphical user interfaces or interactive web applications using technologies such as React, JavaScript/TypeScript, or comparable frameworks.
- Experience working with SQL databases, REST APIs, data-processing pipelines, or scientific/engineering data.
