Stanford University is seeking an Associate Data Engineer to design, build, and steward data pipelines and warehousing solutions across cloud and hybrid environments. This onsite role in Redwood City combines hands-on engineering with mentorship and technical leadership, translating complex requirements into scalable software that supports the university’s data-driven initiatives. Overview
As an Associate Data Engineer, you will design, implement, and maintain data pipelines and data warehousing architectures across cloud and hybrid platforms. You will mentor teammates, provide technical guidance, and translate intricate functional and technical needs into robust, high-performing software solutions that enable analytics and data access.
Responsibilities
- Conceptualize, design, and independently develop solutions for complex systems or programs.
- Create and maintain applications involving sophisticated data handling, including data stores, data lakes, lakehouse architectures, and data warehouses that are scalable, optimized, and fault-tolerant.
- Document architectures and configurations; keep documentation current as systems evolve.
- Provide technical analysis, design, development, data conversion, and implementation support.
- Lead projects of moderate complexity as needed.
- Serve as a technical resource for all Data Engineering applications.
- Evaluate, compare, and integrate new features and technologies into the computing environment.
- Follow the team’s software development methodology.
- Mentor junior software developers.
- Design and implement data migration and data integration across cloud and hybrid environments.
- Demonstrate mastery and hands-on experience with data engineering technologies and scripting languages.
- Translate complex functional and technical requirements into detailed architecture and high-performing software designs.
- Design, build, and optimize data pipelines for collection, storage, access, and analytics.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree and five years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Proficient in designing, developing, testing, and deploying applications.
- Strong logical problem-solving abilities for technically complex applications.
- Hands-on experience with advanced SQL and Python (including PySpark), plus AWS services (S3, Redshift, Glue ETL, IAM, DMS, AppFlow, VPC, and others), Snowflake, FiveTran, Kafka, Airflow, Oracle Cloud, and other open-source tools.
- Experience writing reusable Python/PySpark scripts for ELT, business logic, or APIs; familiarity with Scala and R is a plus.
- Hands-on development across data analysis, provisioning, modeling, performance tuning, and optimization.
- Experience working in AWS cloud environments, selecting and utilizing marketplace tools to meet business requirements.
- Ability to build scalable real-time and batch data pipelines using best practices in data modeling and ETL/ELT processing across diverse tech stacks.
- Experience in data modeling, migration, and integration; understanding SaaS data integration challenges and implementing suitable solutions.
- Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
