Job Description

Technical Writer III, onsite in San Bruno, CA, supports YouTube's Developer Infrastructure team by turning complex engineering topics into accessible documentation and training for developers.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with subject matter experts from YouTube's infrastructure teams to document and teach complex technical information.
  • Plan, author, and maintain educational resources such as documentation, sample code, and videos that guide developers through common workflows.
  • Enhance documents authored by engineers for clarity, coherence, and discoverability.
  • Document internal and external APIs to ensure seamless integration and usage.
  • Identify opportunities to involve engineering teams in ongoing documentation efforts and advocate for documentation best practices.
  • Incorporate AI tooling into workflows and share best practices with teams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 4 years of experience creating content for technical audiences, such as developer documentation, CS course materials, or IT playbooks.
  • 2 years of experience collaborating with subject matter experts to document internal or external APIs and core infrastructure components.

  • Salary: USD 115,000 to 166,000 per year

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in writing, engineering, or a related scientific field.
  • Track record of researching and writing effective documentation for engineers and internal audiences.
  • Understanding of YouTube from both viewer and creator perspectives.
  • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities in a fast paced, evolving environment.

About the Role

Technical writers plan, create, and maintain educational content that supports engineering and user experiences. The work spans documentation, UI text, sample code, videos, and other educational materials, with a focus on explaining complex topics in a way that is practical for the intended audience. As a Technical Writer on the YouTube Developer Infrastructure team, you will bridge advanced engineering concepts and the people who rely on them, researching and documenting tools, frameworks, and platforms that power a leading video platform. You will lead documentation projects, collaborating with infrastructure teams to capture core tech stacks and developer APIs for internal and external partners, while promoting a documentation first culture across YouTube.
