Job Description

Okta is hiring a Staff Back-End Software Engineer for its Resilience Team within the Workforce Identity Cloud (WIC). This hybrid role in San Francisco focuses on leading technical initiatives and owning reliability for a cloud-native Identity as a Service platform, with an emphasis on building backend foundations that help Okta scale.

What you’ll do

  • Work with engineering teams to design, develop, and deliver cloud-based infrastructure projects that address complex reliability challenges and support Okta’s scaling needs.
  • Build and maintain backend frameworks, tools, microservices, and reusable library components that the broader engineering organization can adopt at scale.
  • Promote innovative, scalable, and resilient approaches across teams, including guidance on fault-tolerant system design.
  • Explore and integrate modern AI-driven developer tooling, automated diagnostics, and predictive monitoring to improve performance testing, speed debugging, and strengthen service reliability.
  • Lead rigorous design and code reviews, and raise engineering standards by implementing high-quality unit and functional tests.
  • Participate in and lead incident Root Cause Analysis (RCA) to improve reliability over time, surface systemic weaknesses, and create long-term mitigation plans.
  • Collaborate with Architects, QA, Product Owners, Engineering Services, and Tech Ops to deliver secure and dependable software.
  • Support mentoring for new engineering hires and interns.

What you’ll bring

  • 8+ years of software development experience, with deep, expert-level knowledge of Java (experience with Golang is a strong plus).
  • Experience architecting, implementing, tuning, and debugging global cloud software, including deep understanding of microservices, cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred, with Azure or GCP), and container ecosystems (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • A track record of tackling scaling, redundancy, and performance bottlenecks in high-availability, multi-tenant SaaS environments.
  • Practical experience or strong interest in using generative AI utilities and developer assistance tools (such as AI coding assistants, automated code-generation, intelligent log analytics, or predictive profiling tools) to increase productivity and optimize systems.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills, including the ability to coordinate high-impact technical projects, align stakeholders, and influence technical direction.
  • Prior experience in platform reliability, resilience, or core infrastructure roles is highly valued.
  • U.S. person eligibility requirement: the employee must be either a U.S. citizen as defined in 42 U.S. Code § 9102; a lawful permanent resident (8 U.S.C. 1101(a)(20)); a protected individual as defined in 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3); or a U.S. national (including citizens and non-citizens born in outlying possessions such as American Samoa and Swains Island), including green card holders, refugees, and asylees. Working on a U.S. visa does not qualify as a U.S. person.

Education

  • B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science (or related field), or equivalent industry experience.

Location: San Francisco, CA (hybrid). Compensation: USD 194,000 - 243,000 per year. Minimum experience: 8 years.
