Staff Data Engineer

Okta is seeking a Staff Data Engineer to join the on-site team in New York, NY, working within the Auth0 data engineering ecosystem. This high-impact role guides the architectural evolution of the data platform and drives strategic platform initiatives, beginning with FEDRamp compliance, by collaborating across data, platform, and security teams to deliver scalable, secure data solutions.

Salary: USD 174,000 - 238,700 per year

Responsibilities

• Steer the architectural design and evolution of the data platform, outlining the roadmap for its next phase.
• Own the technical strategy for large-scale platform enhancements, balancing long-term goals with incremental delivery.
• Partner with engineers and leaders across data, platform, and security domains to forge a cohesive and secure architecture.
• Create architectural artifacts such as design documents, threat models, and specifications to clarify and align complex initiatives.
• Serve as a technical mentor and multiplier for the Data Engineering team, elevating performance through guidance, code reviews, and dissemination of best practices.
• Build core components of the new architecture, validate designs with hands-on coding, and establish a pattern for other engineers to follow.

Requirements

• A demonstrated passion for building secure, reliable, and scalable data systems.
• 8+ years of software development experience, including 5+ years in a data engineering or data platform role.
• Proven track record delivering large-scale, cross-functional technical initiatives.
• Extensive experience designing and deploying data infrastructure in a cloud environment, with a preference for AWS.
• Deep architectural knowledge of the modern data stack, including Snowflake, dbt, and Airflow.
• Strong Python and SQL skills, with a high standard for code quality and system design.
• Excellent communication skills, able to clarify complex topics and drive technical decisions.
• Ability to navigate ambiguity, define a path forward, and lead others to successful outcomes.

The Auth0 Data Engineering Team

• Pipeline team, located near the Platform team and data producers, responsible for efficient data ingestion and rapid access to unmodeled data.
• Warehouse team, closer to business teams and data consumers, modeling data in the warehouse to abstract complexity for users and support analysis and decision-making.
• Interface team focused on creating and managing connections between the data platform and external systems, ensuring consistent and reliable data access.

Extra Credit

• Direct experience with security compliance frameworks such as FEDRamp, SOC2, or HIPAA.
