Job Description

ASML is seeking a Senior Software Engineer in San Jose, California (onsite) to provide full technical ownership and technical leadership for complex software module and subsystem design, development, integration, deployment, maintenance, and roadmap activities. The role includes designing and delivering software for ASML machines and applications across analytics, data, control, and algorithm domains.

Role Overview

In this position, you will serve as the technical authority for one or more software modules or subsystems, guiding architecture and execution across the software lifecycle. You will design, develop, test, and integrate software solutions, while ensuring alignment with product and platform architecture and maintaining long-term quality strategy.

Responsibilities

  • Take full technical ownership and lead several complex technical designs, with responsibility for sub-module results.
  • Contribute to development and change of sub-modules and deliver outcomes aligned to overall module goals.
  • Work at Train level in complex environments and interface with other sectors, including negotiation when needed.
  • Operate at module level with an end-to-end view, considering impact across other areas such as research, customer, and marketing.
  • Perform structural troubleshooting at functional level, manage technical uncertainties at sub-module level, and develop creative solutions to resolve them.
  • Assume responsibility for customer problems from relevant operations stakeholders and develop solutions for specific issues.
  • Represent competence across the Product Development Cycle.
  • Act as a Technical Lead Designer steering the work of 6–10 engineers.
  • Provide technical leadership across software architecture, implementation, integration, deployment, maintenance, and technical roadmap activities.
  • Deliver technical direction through coaching and mentoring, code reviews, design reviews, and architectural guidance.
  • Drive software quality, maintainability, and long-term technical strategy, ensuring alignment with product and platform architecture.
  • Develop and/or deliver plans for significant aspects of a research program with guidance from senior colleagues.
  • Evaluate emerging software technologies, frameworks, development tools, and engineering practices relevant to ASML products and platforms.
  • Plan and coordinate product and project requirement identification and elicitation, analyze requirements for completion and alignment, document and manage requirements across the project life cycle, and coordinate end-deliverable verification.
  • Define and document software architecture requirements, quality attributes, interface contracts, and non-functional requirements such as performance, maintainability, reliability, and extensibility.
  • Conduct feasibility studies from technological and organizational perspectives and document findings to support cost-benefit analysis for changes to business processes, products, or business unit structure.
  • Perform feasibility studies and contribute to development of product roadmaps and to the SPS/SDS.
  • Identify feasibility questions and improvements in your domain, and assess feasibility of software architectures, frameworks, technology selections, deployment models, and implementation approaches.
  • Design engineering solutions and associated validation processes to realize design briefs that meet organizational and/or regulatory standards.
  • Develop software concepts, architectural approaches, and engineering strategies balancing functionality, maintainability, scalability, performance, and cost.
  • Develop technical concepts including material choices.
  • Specify (sub)modules using team input, define architecture, make technical choices across phases, resolve technical issues, introduce new problem-solving approaches, and drive module development.
  • Prepare and document high-level design in relevant SEG documents, including software architecture and subsystem decomposition.
  • Establish technology selections and architectural direction, define interfaces and integration approaches, and lead architecture reviews and technical decision-making activities.
  • Detail designs including documentation, develop reusable components, frameworks, services, and APIs, and ensure adherence to architectural standards and engineering best practices.
  • Review designs produced by other engineers and integrate sub-systems into the system, including configuration management and project support.
  • Lead software integration across modules, services, UI components, and hardware interfaces; manage dependencies and package versioning strategies.
  • Support build, deployment, installation, and upgrade processes; resolve architecture, compatibility, and integration issues.
  • Verify SDS and verify design specifications from team members, contributing to testing processes (TPS, a-test, (sub system) TAR, b-test).
  • Develop new testing approaches and strategies to match changing requirements and drive software quality strategy and test automation.
  • Perform root-cause analysis of complex software defects and develop debugging and diagnostic approaches for complex systems.
  • Support performance analysis and optimization activities and lead design and code reviews to improve software quality and maintainability.
  • Adhere to ASML’s EHS policies, procedures, and mandatory instructions, identifying and mitigating safety risks and safeguarding the environment and well-being of oneself and others; instruct the team in safe working methods, identify risky behaviors, and escalate serious issues as appropriate.
  • Create high-level work breakdown, support planning, provide effort estimates, manage assigned projects, delegate tasks, and ensure timely execution and delivery according to quality standards within project management guidelines.
  • Drive technical planning and architecture roadmaps, identify technical risks and mitigation strategies, coordinate technical dependencies across teams and disciplines, and guide execution of complex software development efforts.
  • Document complex design choices and specifications across all phases to keep product documentation current and ensure assumptions and restrictions are recorded, including architecture, APIs, design decisions, and trade-offs.
  • Present technical proposals and design reviews to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, ensuring technical decisions and architectural rationale remain traceable.
  • Stay up to date on technical developments in relevant expertise areas and contribute to broadening and maintaining ASML’s technology base through knowledge sharing, including coaching and mentoring more junior colleagues.
  • Contribute to engineering standards, technical strategy, and continuous improvement initiatives across teams.

Required Education & Experience
