Sr. Embedded Software Engineer - Platform
Job Description
Panasonic Avionics Corporation, based in Irvine, California, is seeking a Sr. Embedded Software Engineer - Platform to design and implement the embedded Linux software and platform services that power Panasonic's data-first aircraft software platform. This role focuses on enabling observability, data models, and hardware abstraction across head-end, seat-end, and ground-connected environments, with a hybrid work arrangement and a salary range of USD 116,000 to 194,000 per year. The position requires a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Software Engineering (or equivalent) and at least eight years of experience.
Responsibilities
- Design, modify, and implement complex embedded software for onboard data distribution, the messaging layer, and platform services.
- Define, implement, and manage onboard messaging topology using Zenoh and related data-centric technologies, including routing and partitioning strategies.
- Configure and optimize data distribution paths based on system constraints, performance needs, and reliability requirements.
- Code, integrate, test, debug, and refine software to deliver scalable, reliable, and maintainable platform solutions.
- Develop tooling to visualize, troubleshoot, and validate messaging topology, data flows, and system state.
- Enable observability through telemetry, tracing, metrics, and service health reporting.
- Review, evaluate, and analyze system designs, interfaces, integration approaches, and data flow requirements.
- Prepare, review, and evaluate interface documentation, specifications, test plans, and procedures.
- Assist in the definition, analysis, and allocation of requirements.
- Document designs in engineering artifacts such as functional block diagrams, data models, and data/logic flow charts.
- Maintain the developed software throughout its lifecycle with an emphasis on longevity and maintainability.
- Provide leadership or technical guidance to junior engineers, designers, and support personnel as assigned.
Requirements
- Strong experience with C/C++, Golang, or Rust; preference for Golang and Rust, with solid C++ allowed.
- Experience developing software under Linux in embedded or resource-constrained environments.
- Experience with data-centric distributed messaging systems such as Zenoh, DDS, MQTT, or similar technologies.
- Experience designing messaging topologies, routing strategies, and partitioning approaches in embedded environments.
- Strong understanding of distributed systems principles, including reliability, scalability, fault tolerance, and service integration.
- Experience working with structured data models, schema evolution, and system state modeling.
- Understanding of secure data distribution, access control, and software security practices.
- Experience integrating legacy systems through adapters, bridges, or translation layers.
- Familiarity with observability concepts including telemetry, tracing, metrics, and service health monitoring.
- Familiarity with digital twin concepts and system-state modeling is desirable.
- Working knowledge of networking fundamentals (TCP/UDP/IP, HTTP/HTTPS, DNS, DHCP) is helpful; deep network administration is not required.
- Desirable familiarity with containers, virtualization, Docker, or similar deployment technologies.
- Ability to resolve complex problems quickly and efficiently in embedded, distributed, and performance-constrained environments.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment with user-centered, iterative design and development cycles.
