Job Description

KBR seeks a Software Engineer 3 in Sioux Falls, SD (hybrid) to lead geospatial data processing, storage and distribution for USGS projects, and to drive the design, development and deployment of large-scale applications and infrastructure with a focus on the Software Development Life Cycle and collaboration with Enterprise Architects and other engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Support processing, storage and distribution of geospatial data for USGS science projects.
  • Ensure software activities align with established Software Development Life Cycle processes.
  • Lead and coordinate activities and provide status updates with Enterprise Architects, software engineers and other project team members across the design, development and deployment of large-scale applications and infrastructure.
  • Analyze system and user requirements to define software requirements.
  • Identify design and development tasks and produce estimates.
  • Create preliminary and detailed designs for software components and document them.
  • Follow established processes and maintain documentation.
  • Manage and participate in peer review processes.
  • Create, administer and troubleshoot large-scale databases while ensuring security.
  • Analyze and maintain existing databases and explore new features.
  • Tune database systems for performance and assist users with query optimization.
  • Prepare design specifications and functional documentation for software, database and user interface tasks.
  • Integrate Apache Airflow into data processing systems to enhance Python workflows.
  • Design geospatial processing systems and databases using best practices for on-premises deployments and potential future cloud architectures.
  • Explore USGS approved AI technologies to identify cost-saving opportunities.
  • Collaborate with Enterprise Architects and System Administrators to plan future migrations to Kubernetes container deployments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems or a related field, plus at least 5 years of progressive related work experience.
  • 4 years designing, developing and deploying large-scale geospatial data processing, storage and distribution applications with a focus on scalability, performance and security.
  • 4 years building geospatial processing systems and incorporating image analysis capabilities via GIS and image processing tools.
  • 4 years developing and optimizing data processing workflows with Python.
  • 4 years creating interactive user interfaces and backend services for enterprise applications using JavaScript, including Node.js and React.
  • 3 years designing schemas, writing optimized queries, and supporting large-scale transactional and analytical workloads in relational databases such as MySQL and PostgreSQL.
  • 3 years managing deployments, automation scripting and troubleshooting in Unix and Linux environments.
  • 3 years integrating software components and enabling secure communication between systems via Web Services and APIs as part of enterprise solutions.
  • 2 years performing tuning, query optimization, backup and recovery, and secure handling of large datasets in database administration, including Postgres and MySQL.
  • 1 year deploying and managing containerized applications.
  • 1 year working with on-premise systems and contributing to planning for future cloud architectures.
