Software Engineer
Job Description
Belcan is hiring a Software Engineer focused on embedded flight software for unmanned aircraft systems in San Luis Obispo, CA (onsite).
Responsibilities
- Develop and tailor the PX4 flight stack and integrate it with QGroundControl for mission execution
- Craft embedded software in C and C++ for flight systems, with Python used to support test and validation workflows
- Develop GPS positioning and navigation-related software components
- Perform autonomy and system-level software integration across vehicle, payload, and ground control interfaces
- Collaborate in Git-based environments (GitHub and GitLab) with standard version control and team workflows
- Develop within modern editors and IDEs, such as Visual Studio Code
- Implement unit testing and software validation practices to ensure reliability
- Work with communication protocols and interfaces (MAVLink, TCP/IP, UDP, and related embedded interfaces)
- Integrate and debug software across hardware and software boundaries in flight and lab environments
- Support rapid iteration driven by integration results, test outcomes, and flight feedback
Requirements
- Degree in a relevant field such as Robotics, Autonomy, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Mathematics
- 5+ years of applicable experience
- Working knowledge of the PX4 platform
- U.S. Citizenship is required due to the nature of the work

Compensation
Salary: USD 104,000 - 145,600 per year
Preferred Qualifications & Skills
- Experience with PX4 flight control stack or similar autopilot ecosystems (for example ROS 2, ArduPilot, Pixhawk)
- Ability to lead small software work packages and own delivery scope
- Embedded real-time software development experience
- Aerospace exposure, especially with unmanned aircraft systems
