Job Description

Onto Innovation is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to work on machine vision software that sits between hardware and software. This role focuses on building and deploying automated inspection and metrology capabilities for advanced semiconductor manufacturing equipment, with an emphasis on real-time performance and sub-micron accuracy.

The position is based in Wilmington, MA and is onsite. Compensation for the role is USD 115,200 - 172,800 per year.

Role Summary

In this machine vision role, you will develop real-time vision algorithms and production-ready systems using C++ and MVTec HALCON. Work includes semiconductor defect detection, alignment, metrology, and 2D/3D inspection, along with calibration and validation on manufacturing tools.

Responsibilities

  • Design, optimize, and implement robust machine vision algorithms using MVTec HALCON and C++ for semiconductor defect detection, alignment, metrology, and 2D/3D inspection.
  • Develop clean, maintainable, high-performance C++ in multi-threaded, multi-process real-time environments on Windows or Linux.
  • Interface software with industrial hardware including GigE cameras, frame grabbers, optics, and specialized lighting systems.
  • Create and calibrate high-precision coordinate transformation matrices (pixel-to-world) to support micron-level spatial accuracy.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and automation engineers to test, debug, and validate vision systems on actual manufacturing equipment.
  • Travel domestically and internationally, up to 30%.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of hands-on machine vision software development experience, specifically in semiconductor or high-precision electronics manufacturing.
  • Strong C++ skills, including object-oriented programming, data structures, and memory management.
  • Production-level experience with MVTec HALCON, including HDevEngine and/or HALCON/C++ integration.
  • Familiarity with semiconductor manufacturing processes such as wafer inspection, die bonding, wire bonding, or packaging.
  • Experience with software development methodologies such as Agile, Scrum, or Kanban.
  • Background in digital image processing, matrix mathematics, 2D/3D geometry, and camera calibration.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related technical field.
