Senior Linux Software Engineer
Job Description
Teledyne Technologies Inc. is looking for a Senior Linux Software Engineer to help build and sustain software for advanced analytical instrumentation systems. This onsite role in West Lafayette, IN focuses on embedded, Linux-based development across the full lifecycle, from instrument control and user interfaces to data processing and analytical algorithms.
What you’ll be doing
- Design, develop, test, and maintain software applications and embedded systems across the software development lifecycle.
- Build end-to-end software solutions that span instrument control, user interfaces, data processing, and analytical algorithms.
- Implement user interface features, data analysis capabilities, and tools for instrument troubleshooting and debugging.
- Support new product development and sustain existing products through troubleshooting, enhancements, and defect resolution.
- Partner with engineering, scientific, project management, and manufacturing teams to deliver high-quality solutions.
- Participate in software design reviews, code reviews, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Linux embedded engineering focus
You’ll apply hands-on experience with embedded Linux development, including Linux system configuration and scripting, build systems, kernel and driver work, and deployment/update mechanisms. The role emphasizes practical software architecture and maintaining reliable systems that support advanced instrumentation.
Required qualifications
- 8+ years of software development experience.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field strongly preferred; equivalent experience considered.
- Hands-on embedded Linux experience, including Linux system configuration, Bash scripting, Yocto/BitBake, Linux kernel and driver development, device trees, U-Boot, software package management, and deployment/update frameworks such as SWUpdate.
- Strong proficiency in C#, .NET, and object-oriented software design.
- Experience with Git and collaborative software development practices.
- Experience developing software for embedded systems and distributed architectures.
- Strong understanding of multi-threaded programming, debugging, and software security principles.
- Programming experience in C and C++; Rust experience is a plus.
- Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance, if required.
Helpful experience
- Experience with Blazor, WebSockets, and GraphQL.
- Experience with Docker or other containerization technologies.
- Experience with instrumentation control, scientific instruments, or mass spectrometry systems.
- Experience working in an Agile development environment.
- Familiarity with electro-mechanical systems and hardware integration.
- Experience using Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) in a development environment.
