Senior Embedded Software Engineer (Space)

Viasat, a leader in space infrastructure solutions, seeks a Senior Embedded Software Engineer to drive the design, development, and integration of embedded software for satellite payload flight control, cryptographic functions, and automated test systems. This onsite role in Tempe, AZ, combines advanced C/C++ and Python work with growing interest in Rust to support mission-critical space operations. You will join a cross-disciplinary team focused on robust software that underpins complex space programs.

Responsibilities

• Break down system-level requirements to produce detailed software requirements
• Develop embedded software using C/C++ and Rust
• Create embedded and system test software in C/C++ and Python
• Build Linux OS applications using Python, C/C++, and Rust
• Develop FreeRTOS based applications in C/C++ and Rust
• Engineer applications for microprocessors, embedded processors, and FPGAs
• Create bare-metal drivers for embedded hardware
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex integration challenges
• Architect CI/CD pipelines and automation services
• Identify opportunities to enhance product reliability and security
• Lead design reviews and maintain documentation tasks
• Engage in Agile SCRUM development processes
• Lead cross-disciplinary teams
• Work autonomously to solve well-defined problems
• Provide guidance and mentorship to junior staff
• This is an onsite role

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, computer engineering or a related field
• 8+ years designing and implementing embedded software in C/C++
• 4+ years using Linux OS, ideally in an embedded environment
• 3+ years designing and implementing system test software in Python
• Experience with Linux and RTOS applications
• Object-oriented design and development experience
• Ability to plan, track, and report on team progress
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• US citizenship
• Ability to travel up to 10%

Salary

Salary range is USD 165,000 - 307,000 per year. For specific work locations within San Jose, the San Francisco Bay Area, and the New York City metropolitan area, the base pay range is USD 205,000 - 307,000 per year. Base pay may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
