Senior Data Engineer
Job Description
Nucor Business Technology (NBT) is looking for a Senior Data Engineer to help build and evolve a secure, scalable, and reliable data platform. This full-time senior individual contributor role is based onsite in Waterloo, IN, where you will shape lakehouse patterns, set engineering standards, and guide the roadmap for data pipelines and lakehouse infrastructure.
In this position, you will provide technical leadership, strengthen monitoring and observability, and partner across teams to improve connectivity, network security, and data access policy. Safety remains a core expectation across all Nucor roles, including how you identify and address risks to data quality, platform stability, and access control.
What you’ll do
- Build on the Lakehouse pattern by defining layer boundaries, what belongs where, and how domains relate, then establish the standards for transformation and orchestration that other engineers follow.
- Provide technical leadership by mentoring engineers, reviewing pipeline and transformation designs before implementation, and resolving complex problems that others cannot.
- Own the monitoring and observability standard so issues surface early, before they reach stakeholders.
- Partner with Database Administrators, IT, and Nucor business divisions (including NBG) on connectivity, network security, and data access policy, while representing NBT in enterprise forums and communities of practice.
- Lead the data platform and engineering tooling roadmap by prioritizing legacy migrations, establishing migration and cutover standards, guiding decisions to migrate, rebuild, or retire capabilities, and advising BI teams and application leadership on data platform initiatives.
- Treat data accuracy, reliability, and platform availability as safety-critical responsibilities by proactively identifying and escalating risks tied to data quality, platform stability, and access control.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related discipline.
- 10+ years of experience in data engineering, business intelligence architecture, or enterprise data platform roles.
- 5+ years in a senior-level technical role (for example, senior engineer or architect) that includes providing mentorship, coaching, or technical guidance.
- Demonstrated experience architecting and operating an enterprise data warehouse or cloud data platform (for example, Azure Synapse, Databricks, or Microsoft Fabric) used as a source of truth for organizational reporting and analytics.
- Candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship now and in the future. NBT is unable to provide sponsorship for this role.
- Ability to demonstrate leading and upholding safety policies, practices, procedures, and housekeeping standards at all times.

Preferred qualifications
- Hands-on Databricks development for specific initiatives (for example, Python-based data engineering work) and/or Microsoft Fabric (Lakehouse, Data Factory, Notebooks).
- Experience designing dimensional/star-schema models and semantic layers for business reporting, including gold-layer design within a medallion/lakehouse pattern.
- Working knowledge of Azure data services: Data Lake Storage Gen2 and Key Vault.
- Experience with CI/CD and infrastructure-as-code for data engineering artifacts (Azure DevOps; ARM/Bicep or Terraform).
- Experience mentoring engineers, building career and skills rubrics, and setting technical standards for a team.
- Hands-on experience optimizing Power BI/Fabric capacity, cost, and performance.
- Experience integrating and consolidating data across multiple ERP systems.
- Experience with Master Data Management, data governance, and customer/product identity resolution.
- Experience in manufacturing, industrial, or similarly operations-driven sectors is a plus.
