Senior Data Engineer

What You’ll Do

As a Senior Data Engineer, you will build and maintain the data foundation used for analysis and reporting. You will help deliver reliable data pipelines, collection systems, data models, and a data warehouse environment that supports timely, efficient datasets for internal analytics teams.

• Maintain and build out the data warehouse and analytics environment
• Develop data pipelines, collection systems, and data models to support data analysis and reporting
• Research improvements to data collection and processing
• Collaborate with data analytics teams across Harris County Public Health to provide relevant datasets
• Share knowledge to strengthen team-wide expertise
• Communicate project status, risks, milestones, and assigned roles to cross-department stakeholders
• Complete other assigned duties, including special tasks related to responding to an emergency event

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field
• 8 years of experience in database administration
• 5 years of experience with Stored Procedures, advanced query functions such as Common Table Expressions and Pivots, and other advanced RDBMS tasks
• 5 years of experience with SSIS
• 3 years of experience practicing agile principles
• 3 years of experience working with HIPAA protected data
• Strong SQL skills and database architecture
• In-depth understanding of IT security and how to handle health protected data
• Strong problem-solving skills to analyze issues, identify root causes, and develop effective solutions
• Ability to manage time efficiently, set priorities, and meet project deadlines
• Ability to foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment and support teamwork and knowledge sharing

Preferences

• Experience with Azure and Snowflake platforms
• Experience working with HL7 Data
• Experience in business reporting
• Experience with PowerBI

Work Schedule and Location

• Full-Time | Grant-Funded Position
• Monday – Friday | 8 am – 5 pm
• Hours may vary based on the business needs of the department or task requirements
• May require periodic overnight travel and long hours/overtime during emergencies/disasters
