Scientific Software Developer

Peraton is seeking a Scientific Software Developer to support the NRL ocean modeling team at Stennis Space Center, MS in an onsite role. The position centers on developing, testing, and debugging scientific software while working to improve Navy ocean models and data assimilation capabilities using HPC workflows and METOC pipelines.

You will contribute to NRL Code 7320 objectives through hands-on software development, model coupling improvements, assimilation enhancements, and documentation that supports technical reporting and publications.

Key responsibilities

• Use METOC simulation pipelines, data assimilation systems, and high-performance computing to develop and optimize Navy ocean models, including HYCOM and the NCODA system
• Develop, test, and debug scientific software with languages such as Fortran, Python, and C++, integrating with Navy systems including NCOM and NCODA-var to improve model performance and support the transition from research to operational systems
• Improve model coupling, enhance data assimilation techniques, maintain comprehensive software documentation, and contribute to technical reports and publications as needed for NRL Code 7320

Minimum qualifications

• 5 years experience with BS/BA, or 3 years with MS/MA
• Secret security clearance
• Demonstrated experience with METOC simulation pipelines and real-time data assimilation systems
• Demonstrated experience with modern programming languages including Fortran, Python, Java, C, C++, Assembly, and Matlab
• Demonstrated experience with Linux and scripting, including Bash/KSH, Perl, and NCAR Command-Language
• Demonstrated experience with scientific software development and deployment practices, including compilers and workload managers/schedulers such as MPI, PBS/Slurm, GCC/Gfortran, IFX/ICC/Ifort, make, and HPC-related tools
• Demonstrated experience with data formats and debugging/profiling tools such as NetCDF, BUFR, GRIB1/2, GDB, and Valgrind, along with Linux/Unix
• Demonstrated experience with documentation approaches including Javadocs, pydocs, Pod, manpages, and custom help menu frameworks for KSH, Perl, Python, and Fortran
• Specific experience with Navy ocean modeling and data assimilation systems: NCOM, NCODA-QC, NCODA-prep, and NCODA-var
• Demonstrated experience running Navy scientific modeling and data assimilation systems on HPC platforms
• Demonstrated ability to debug Navy scientific modeling and data assimilation computer codes

Compensation

USD 80,000 - 128,000 per year (target salary range).
