Principal Software Engineer
Job Description
Autodesk is hiring a Principal Software Engineer to research, design, and develop construction cloud software products. The role spans end-to-end delivery across APIs and user interfaces, with a focus on reliability, performance, and cost through cloud optimization and engineering best practices.
Responsibilities
- Research, design, and develop computer and network software or specialized utility programs
- Analyze user needs and create software solutions using principles and techniques from computer science, engineering, and mathematical analysis
- Update software and enhance existing capabilities
- Develop and maintain construction cloud software products, including APIs and user interfaces
- Design software systems that add new functionality and enable flows that use multiple APIs and services
- Ensure program functionality by troubleshooting malfunctions, correcting errors, and modifying existing software
- Perform code reviews, evaluate implementations, and provide feedback to improve tooling
- Propose cloud-related optimizations and best practices to improve reliability, performance, and cost
- Collaborate with Product Managers to analyze system requirements from customers and break them down into executable sprint tasks
- Identify and analyze industry- and product-specific customer concerns to help prioritize feature development
- Review new and existing designs for compliance with the latest directives and standards
- Implement high-level designs using robust and maintainable software processes
- May work with computer hardware engineers to integrate hardware and software systems, including specifications and performance requirements
- May maintain databases within an application area, working individually or coordinating database development as part of a team
- Must be available to work on projects at various, unanticipated sites throughout the U.S.

Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related field, plus six (6) years of progressive, post-baccalaureate experience in the job offered or in a software engineer-related occupation

- Developing and maintaining both front-end and back-end systems to build seamless, end-to-end solutions with optimal functionality, scalability, and performance across the application stack
- Integrating front-end user interfaces using frameworks such as React, Angular, or Vue.js with back-end services and APIs built with Node.js, Java, or Python to create cohesive full-stack applications
- Designing and consuming RESTful APIs to support smooth data flow between front-end and back-end
- Experience with SQL databases including PostgreSQL and MySQL, with schema design and query optimization for scalable data storage
- Troubleshooting front-end and back-end issues including bugs, performance bottlenecks, and server-side errors across platforms and devices
- Conducting full-stack code reviews with emphasis on maintainability, performance, and security best practices
- Deploying and managing full-stack applications on cloud platforms including AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud, with a focus on CI/CD pipelines, containerization with Docker, and serverless architectures
- Setting up and maintaining DevOps practices including continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD), performance monitoring, and automated testing to support smooth releases and high-performance applications
- Working with product managers, designers, and engineers to translate complex requirements into user stories and deliver features in Agile sprints with alignment across multidisciplinary teams

Salary and Location

Compensation: USD 139,000 - 249,260 per yearly

Salary Transparency
Salary is one part of Autodesk’s competitive compensation package. For U.S.-based roles, Autodesk expects a starting base salary between $139,000 and $249,260. Offers are based on experience and geographic location and may exceed this range. In addition to base salaries, compensation may include annual cash bonuses, commissions for sales roles, stock grants, and a comprehensive benefits package.
