Power BI Developer
Job Description
This contract Power BI Developer role in Denver, CO offers a hybrid work arrangement and the chance to collaborate across business, data analytics, and IT teams. The engagement is paid at a rate of USD 1 per hour and is expected to extend beyond 12 months. Exposure to AI tools to enhance data analysis workflows is a plus, with remote work supported within Colorado and in-person collaboration in state offices as needed.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with business stakeholders and data analysts to capture requirements and objectives for reports, visuals, and the underlying data model.
- Identify relevant data sources and attributes to inform the data model.
- Utilize intermediate Excel skills for complex formulas, pivot tables, and data analysis.
- Reverse engineer business processes, deconstruct existing formulas and analyses, interpret requirements, and propose efficiency improvements and logic optimizations.
- Design and document conceptual, logical, and physical data models to support business needs.
- Implement row-level and column-level security within the Power BI semantic model.
- Develop reusable semantic data models within Power BI.
- Run Tabular Editor Best Practice Analyzer to align with modeling and DAX best practices.
- Create relationships between tables and optimize data structures.
- Connect to diverse data sources including APIs, BigQuery, ArcGIS map and feature layers, SQL databases, Excel files, and streaming datasets.
- Ensure seamless data extraction and transformation processes.
- Collaborate with the OIT Integrations team to determine available integration patterns.
- Write DAX formulas, including calculated columns, measures, and custom calculations.
- Design and develop interactive reports and dashboards with slicers, visuals, drill-through, streaming visuals, and ArcGIS visuals.
- Optimize Power BI reports and underlying data models for performance using DAX Studio and built-in tools.
- Publish reports to the Power BI Service, manage access controls, automate refresh schedules, and optimize performance for large datasets.
- Leverage AI tools to enhance workflows and data analysis; familiarity with Google AI tools is a plus.
- Follow organizational patterns for source and version control of Power BI files and utilize Azure DevOps where appropriate.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather requirements, explain technical concepts to non-technical users, and deliver reports aligned with business goals.
- Present complex data insights to stakeholders clearly during meetings and working sessions to discuss backlog and evolving requirements.
- This engagement is expected to exceed 12 months.
- Remote work is supported; contractor must perform work within the State of Colorado, preferably in the Denver Metropolitan Area, with occasional in-person meetings at a State office.
Requirements
- Proficient in Excel at an intermediate level, comfortable with complex formulas, pivot tables, and data analysis.
- Proficiency in writing DAX (Data Analysis Expressions) formulas, including calculated columns, measures, and custom calculations.
- Familiarity with running Tabular Editor Best Practice Analyzer for modeling and DAX best practices.
- Experience connecting to data sources such as APIs, BigQuery, ArcGIS map and feature layers, SQL databases, and Excel files, including streaming datasets.
- Experience with ArcGIS visuals.
- Proficiency publishing reports to the Power BI Service, managing access controls, automating refresh schedules, and optimizing performance for large datasets.
