Multimedia & Digital Communications Developer
Job Description
The Multimedia & Digital Communications Developer will contribute to capturing and shaping high-quality multimedia content from The Salvation Army National Headquarters in Alexandria, VA, onsite. This role directs on-set production and photography, edits for leadership approvals, and manages equipment while supporting emergency response storytelling to strengthen the organization’s image.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary support for videography and multimedia development to the Assistant Director of Communications, overseeing end-to-end content production, editing, and distribution to advance internal and external communications goals.
- Supervise the Multimedia Production Specialist and coordinate multiple projects and team deliverables to meet the department and NCRD’s video and motion-creative needs.
- Manage and evaluate the work of direct reports, plan and monitor assignments, provide training, conduct performance reviews, and give constructive feedback to improve productivity and effectiveness.
- Coordinate multimedia and video staff, monitor work quality and production, inform the Assistant Director of Communications of issues, and offer recommendations on candidates for multimedia roles.
- Utilize photo and video to communicate the organization’s mission and support digital communications objectives to increase fundraising and reinforce The Salvation Army’s brand.
- Serve as the primary cinematography lead on all department productions, internally and externally, while building support across departments as approved by the Communications Director.
- Translate producers' storytelling needs into cinematic visuals by imagining and creating looks with the existing equipment, ensuring originality and variety.
- Stay current with production trends and apply lighting, cameras, and lensing techniques to achieve desired looks.
- Provide instruction and training to crew members and novices on gear operation to enable innovative visual results.
- Act as the primary editor for all content, including documentary and narrative pieces; editing responsibilities may be allocated to the Multimedia Production Specialist or contracted team as needed.
- Make informed editorial decisions to preserve messaging during cuts and produce multiple edits from the same footage to meet diverse audience needs.
- Document directions from department and section heads; support post-production tasks such as updating, uploading, and quality control of finished videos and website content.
- Maintain tracking of video capture assets, transfer footage to computers, and ensure footage security.
- Assist in digital transfer for media management and storage on hard drives for contracted editors.
- Be available to travel, including domestic and international assignments, as required.
- Teach interns and junior team members to assist with production tasks as needed.
- Keep inventory of all NHQ production equipment and handle loading, unloading, and driving Salvation Army vehicles for multimedia collection; perform routine and special maintenance on gear.
- Contribute to planning and implementing the digital communications strategy and associated content for the national website and social channels, including Facebook, X, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube.
- Adhere to the organizational style guide to ensure brand alignment across digital materials.
- Serve as the primary videographer and photographer for feature stories and special events.
- Support the establishment and execution of strategic department and external communications goals; provide requested training on visual content creation.
- Collaborate with SA Officers, THQ and department staff, volunteers, vendors, and donors; participate in planning national conferences and training resources as needed.
- Assume additional duties as assigned by the supervisor or NCRD leadership; demonstrate dependability through attendance and punctuality; be prepared to deploy on short notice to rapidly capture developing stories, including readiness to deploy with the necessary digital and multimedia equipment outside scheduled hours.
Requirements
- Associate or bachelor’s degree in film or television production is highly preferred.
- Awareness of film procedures, terminology, and production processes.
- On-set production experience is required.
- Working knowledge of social media content creation and engagement strategies.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive), Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere, DaVinci Resolve, Dropbox, and other postproduction software.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Proficiency with various camera systems and lighting for video production, as well as audio recording equipment.
- Strong editing experience with professional software such as Adobe Premiere, Avid, and DaVinci Resolve; ability to encode video to multiple formats.
- Capability to perform basic color correction and create lower thirds and graphics; adept at editing sound, including noise reduction and adding music beds and effects.
- Excellent communication skills, with strong organizational, proofreading, editing, and problem-solving abilities; working knowledge of online publishing for websites and social media.
