Mid SW Developer
Job Description
A mid level software developer on an Agile team delivering cloud-native web applications for a government agency, leveraging Angular, Java/Spring Boot, and AWS in a hybrid Fairfax, VA setting.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate in an Agile environment to research best practices, design and implement microservices, deploy solutions to AWS, and mentor teammates.
- Contribute to the architecture and development of modern cloud-native applications using Angular and Java/Spring Boot.
- Write clean, well-organized code following best practices and share knowledge to raise the team’s capabilities.
- Participate in all phases of the software development lifecycle, including requirements, design, estimation, coding, code reviews, and testing.
- Author and review frontend code with AI-assisted paired programming techniques.
- Deploy and manage applications on AWS using containerized environments and CI/CD pipelines.
- Develop and consume RESTful APIs, applying API design patterns and microservice communication concepts.
- Build a solid understanding of data structures, problem solving, algorithm design, and data formats such as JSON and YAML.
- Join daily standups, code collaboration sessions, and sprint ceremonies to maintain steady progress.
- Engage with clients and end users to provide a technical perspective on application capabilities.
- Participate in technical design sessions to create sustainable, high performing features with accurate estimates.
- Author automated tests (unit, integration, and end-to-end) for both frontend and backend components.
- Continuously improve development tooling, processes, and system architecture.
- Develop a strong understanding of PostgreSQL database design, query optimization, and data access patterns.
- Follow direction from solution architects and technical leads while contributing technical insights and recommendations.
Requirements
- 35+ years of hands-on experience with modern languages and technologies (HTML, Angular, Java, Python, TypeScript, JavaScript).
- Solid understanding of design patterns and microservice architecture.
- Positive, can-do attitude with a drive to contribute to team success.
- Strong communication skills with internal teammates and external stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently and within a dynamic team, delivering quality code for reviews and demonstrations.
- Eagerness to research, learn, and apply emerging technologies.
- Experience developing and consuming RESTful APIs in a microservices environment.
- Self-starter who quickly researches, learns, and applies new technologies.
- Strong consulting skills with the ability to collaborate with various organizations to solve problems.
- US citizenship is required due to government contracts.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline preferred.
- Directly related software development experience.
- Exposure to modern development tools such as Maven/Gradle, Git, and IDEs like IntelliJ or VS Code.
- Proficiency with AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Amazon Q).
- Basic understanding of containerization (Docker) and cloud deployment (AWS).
- Experience working in an Agile/Scrum environment.
- Backend technologies: Java, Spring Boot, Spring Security, Spring Data JPA (Hibernate), REST API design, JSON.
- Frontend technologies: Angular (v14+), TypeScript, Angular Material or Bootstrap.
- Databases: PostgreSQL; familiarity with migration tools such as Flyway or Liquibase.
- Containerization and orchestration: Docker, Kubernetes (EKS).
- Monitoring and observability: Datadog, CloudWatch, or similar.
- Authentication and authorization: OAuth 2.0 / OIDC (Okta, AWS Cognito, Keycloak).
- Testing: JUnit, Mockito, or Cypress.
- Event-driven architecture: SQS/SNS, Kafka (exposure).
- Code management: Git, GitHub, pull request workflows.
- Collaboration tools: JIRA, Confluence.
- Core services: ECS/EKS, RDS, S3, SQS, SNS, Lambda, CloudWatch.
- Infrastructure as code: CloudFormation or Terraform.
- Serverless patterns and event-driven design.
- Analytics and data tools: AWS Glue, Databricks, Tableau, SageMaker, Quicksight.
- CI/CD: Jenkins, GitHub Actions.
- Containers: Docker, Kubernetes.
- Code quality: SonarQube, Nexus/Artifactory.
- Monitoring and observability: Datadog, CloudWatch, X-Ray.
- OAuth 2.0 / OIDC, JWT-based authentication.
- Experience with identity providers such as Okta, SecureAuth, or AWS Cognito.
