Machine Learning Engineer - Notifications & Personalization

Cupertino, CA $185k - $325k/yr Full time Posted 2d ago

Job Description

Build privacy-preserving intelligence for iOS that makes experiences more proactive, personal, and intentional. You will train, deploy, and evaluate machine learning models that help power core system features such as notifications, widgets, and Focus prediction, working with software and ML engineers to deliver high-quality results while respecting on-device power and performance constraints.

Onsite in Cupertino, CA, with a base pay range of $184,700 to $324,800 per year based on skills, qualifications, experience, and location.

What you’ll do

  • Ship and evaluate machine learning systems at scale, including interpreting real-world metrics to understand model and product impact.
  • Design and run evaluation frameworks to measure model quality, user engagement, and product outcomes across large populations.
  • Build instrumentation and telemetry pipelines to collect, analyze, and act on user signals.
  • Plan and implement experimentation for on-device machine learning models to understand deployed performance and optimize results.
  • Implement, train, and optimize models using unsupervised and supervised learning techniques, including classification, regression, and artificial neural networks.
  • Use open source tooling such as Scikit-Learn and Apple frameworks including CoreML and CreateML to build and iterate.
  • Apply reinforcement learning to personalize on-device suggestions such as app, people, and action recommendations.
  • Deploy models for on-device inference using Python, Objective-C, and Swift, with production-quality code that is clean, readable, testable, and deployable.
  • Select and shape datasets and data representations, including identifying sources and implementing algorithms to collect privacy-preserved data for training.
  • Apply data preparation workflows including preprocessing, profiling, cleansing, validation, and transformation for model training.
  • Use statistical and mathematical methods (including regression) with Python and SQL-based querying tools to derive insights from large datasets.
  • Collaborate with the Apple Design team to ensure intelligent features feel intentional, not intrusive, and with Privacy Engineering to support privacy-preserved data collection and security.
  • Translate ambiguous user needs into measurable signals, tuning models for user-perceived quality rather than purely statistical metrics.
  • Work within embedded operating system constraints such as performance, memory, and power, and build across the iOS system stack using Objective-C, Swift, and C++.
  • Develop UI development, design, and prototyping experience to connect model decisions to user experiences.

Experience & qualifications

  • 7-10 years of experience
  • Experience shipping and evaluating at scale
  • Experience training and deploying machine learned models
  • Strong focus on building great user experiences
  • Experience working on embedded operating systems
  • BS, M.S., or PhD in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Machine Learning, or related field

Tools you’ll use

  • Scikit-Learn, CoreML, CreateML
  • Python, Objective-C, Swift
  • SQL, C++

Pay & benefits

  • Base pay range: $184,700 to $324,800 per year (depends on skills, qualifications, experience, and location)
  • Comprehensive medical and dental coverage
  • Retirement benefits
  • Discounted products and free services
  • Reimbursement for certain educational expenses, including tuition
  • Eligible for discretionary restricted stock unit awards
  • Opportunity to purchase Apple stock at a discount through the Employee Stock Purchase Plan (voluntary participation)
  • Discretionary bonuses or commission payments and possible relocation support (as applicable)

Note: Apple benefit, compensation, and employee stock program eligibility requirements and other terms apply to the applicable plan or program.
