Lead Software Engineer - Reference Data Engineering
Job Description
Build trusted, secure, real-time reference data platforms for JPMorganChase’s Corporate Sector Reference Data Engineering group. This onsite Chicago role focuses on designing and delivering scalable data infrastructure using a modern data mesh architecture, with Java and Spring Boot microservices plus event-driven streaming on AWS, Databricks, and on-prem environments. You will also help advance AI-assisted engineering practices and elevate validation standards across the team.
What you’ll do
- Lead end-to-end delivery for assigned features, including requirements, design, implementation, testing, deployment, and monitoring
- Design and develop Java/Spring Boot microservices to support real-time data product delivery and platform capabilities
- Own technical execution and troubleshoot complex issues, applying creative approaches to break down hard data infrastructure problems
- Develop secure, high-quality production code and review or debug code written by others to maintain engineering standards
- Apply event-driven streaming and evolve AI/ML-driven data quality capabilities to strengthen reliability and trust in reference data
- Optimize performance, scalability, and cost efficiency for microservices and data pipelines, backed by comprehensive tests (unit, integration, end-to-end)
- Participate in design and code reviews, proactively remediate technical debt, and support production and incident response
- Share knowledge through documentation, runbooks, and tech talks
- Drive adoption of enterprise-authorized AI-assisted engineering practices (for example, AI-assisted code review/refactoring, test strategy acceleration, incident/root-cause analysis support) and promote reuse of effective patterns
What you bring
- Formal training or certification in software engineering concepts and 5+ years of applied experience
- Hands-on, practical experience delivering system design, application development, testing, and operational stability
- Expert-level Java proficiency with deep knowledge of Spring Boot, Spring Cloud, Spring Data, and Spring Security (JWT/OAuth2), plus the Spring Framework and cloud-ready application development on AWS
- Strong understanding of distributed systems, microservices architecture, and design patterns
- Production-level AWS experience with EC2, S3, Lambda, CloudWatch, IAM, Kinesis, and hands-on database experience including MongoDB, Snowflake, and Databricks with relational SQL
- Experience with Git/Bitbucket, CI/CD pipelines, and modern DevOps practices such as Docker, Kubernetes, and Terraform, aligned to SDLC, agile methodologies, and continuous delivery
- Proficiency in Java/J2EE and REST APIs, plus experience building event-driven microservices using Kafka (including Kinesis and Spark Structured Streaming) and message brokers such as Kafka and RabbitMQ
- Hands-on experience with Git/Bitbucket, JIRA, and Maven in system design and application development
- Ability to tackle design and functionality problems independently with clear articulation of technical concepts and high ownership of delivery quality
Compensation and location
- Location: Chicago, IL (onsite)
- Salary: USD 137,750 - 185,000 per yearly
