Lead Software Engineer - Axiom ControllerView
Job Description
M&T Bank is seeking a Lead Software Engineer to support and modernize Axiom ControllerView capabilities used for regulatory reporting. This onsite role in Buffalo, New York focuses on expert-level development, requirements planning leadership, and the technical delivery needed to keep Axiom-related systems reliable, secure, and operationally efficient.
You will work hands-on with Microsoft Azure and Python while partnering with engineering, infrastructure, security, and business stakeholders to translate regulatory needs into dependable technical solutions. Alongside coaching responsibilities, the role emphasizes code quality, change execution, testing discipline, and continuous improvement across teams.
What you’ll do
- Develop and coach team members while independently delivering application work within approved Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) processes.
- Identify and recommend metrics that address business needs and minimize risk to the Bank through clean, resilient code.
- Review and approve pull request designs and proposals, and oversee change management execution for requests.
- Set expectations for peer review, coaching improvements in code reviews, code quality, and implementation practices.
- Author expert-level source code that is organized, efficient, and secure in at least one programming language, with moderate proficiency in at least one additional language.
- Oversee source control management for other team members and perform merges into the production deployment path.
- Review testing methodology and code coverage to ensure comprehensive testing, coaching on areas of opportunity.
- Drive adherence to patterns and practices for performance testing, resiliency, and optimization within your domain.
- Review and approve requirement plans on behalf of the team, ensuring completeness, accuracy, and feasibility in alignment with delivery partners.
- Partner across groups to suggest continuous process improvements when technical or architectural concerns require action.
- Contribute technical requirements for delivery and maintenance solutions within your domain.
- Communicate architecture, progress, and challenges effectively to business and technical stakeholders.
- Provide input on application architecture design, engineering practices, and pattern changes, and present at architecture peer group and architecture review board meetings.
- Present team work at internal peer meetings and author internal blog posts.
- Support design, development, maintenance, and modernization of Axiom ControllerView solutions for regulatory reporting.
- Apply Microsoft Azure, Python, cloud engineering, and automation skills to improve platform support, integrations, deployment processes, and operational efficiency.
- Develop Python scripts, APIs, data-processing utilities, and automation to streamline support and repeatable operational activities.
- Support deployments, integrations, monitoring, and troubleshooting across development, test, and production environments.
- Implement cloud engineering best practices across scalability, resiliency, performance, security, identity and access management, and cost optimization.
- Support CI/CD pipelines, Git-based source control, infrastructure automation, release activities, and production implementation readiness.
- Collaborate to translate regulatory reporting requirements into reliable technical solutions.
- Monitor Azure resources and Axiom application performance, support incident response and root-cause analysis, and drive timely resolution and continuous improvement.
- Create and maintain technical documentation, process flows, runbooks, deployment instructions, and production support procedures.
- Understand and adhere to M&T Bank risk and regulatory standards, policies, and controls aligned with the Company’s Risk Appetite, escalating risk-related issues to management as needed.
- Promote a culture of belonging that reflects the M&T Bank brand and maintain internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points and regulator-raised issues as applicable.
Core requirements
- Education: Bachelor’s degree (or an Associate’s degree).
- Experience: Minimum 5 years of systems analysis and/or application development experience (or for Associate’s degree, minimum 7 years in systems analysis and/or application development).
- In lieu of a degree: Combined minimum of 9 years of education and/or relevant work experience, including at least 5 years of system analysis and/or application development.
- Technical proficiency: Expert proficiency in at least one relevant programming language and professional proficiency in at least one additional relevant programming language.
