Data Engineer - Oracle, MySQL, OLTP
Job Description
Enterprise-scale data platforms for lending payments are at the center of PNC’s Lending Tech organization. In this onsite Data Engineering role, you’ll design, build, and operate highly available, performant, and secure OLTP databases and data movement patterns on MySQL and Oracle, supporting transactional journeys end-to-end.
Based in Farmers Branch, TX, you’ll be accountable for database architecture and implementation decisions that impact transaction integrity, latency, resiliency, and operational excellence. The work is grounded in reliability and engineering rigor, with documentation, automation, and validated operational readiness forming core expectations.
Responsibilities
- Design and evolve an enterprise transactional (OLTP) data model for lending payment processing, including schemas, constraints, indexing strategies, partitioning, and retention or archival patterns.
- Define database standards to improve reliability, scalability, performance, and resiliency across MySQL and Oracle.
- Implement and operate high availability and disaster recovery patterns, validating operational readiness through failover or failback checks, replication health, and recovery objectives.
- Drive performance engineering through query tuning, index strategy refinement, execution plan analysis, and contention or locking investigation, plus workload management.
- Implement automation for database operations such as provisioning support, patch readiness support, backup validation, health checks, and runbook-driven execution.
- Design and support replication and data movement strategies as needed for resiliency or cross-site requirements (preferred Oracle skills include Golden Gate and Data Guard).
- Partner with security to enforce encryption in transit and at rest, least privilege, auditing, secrets management integration, and vulnerability remediation for database platforms.
- Collaborate with application teams on schema evolution, release coordination, and safe migration approaches, including MySQL to Oracle considerations.
- Create durable documentation including architecture diagrams, decision records, runbooks, and operational validation checklists.
Requirements
- 3+ years of strong hands-on experience designing and operating high-volume, enterprise OLTP databases supporting mission-critical transactions.
- Advanced SQL and performance tuning experience across MySQL and Oracle (query tuning, indexing, partitioning, execution plan analysis).
- Operational best practices experience including backup and restore validation, patch planning, monitoring and alerting, incident response, and runbooks.
- Proven ability to collaborate across engineering, operations, and security with clear, structured communication.
- BS in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
- Ability to work with users, developers, operations, and business partners to define data service requirements and support the data preparation process development.
- Experience implementing data migration and transformation activities to ensure accuracy and security.
Preferred Qualifications (Oracle Focus)
- Oracle Exadata experience (engineering, tuning, or operations).
- Oracle Data Guard experience (HA/DR, role transitions, validation of primary or standby states).
- Oracle Golden Gate experience (replication design and operations).
- Understanding of enterprise MySQL deployment and replication patterns (for example, primary or replica cross-site patterns).
- Experience owning significant components of the database platform with minimal guidance and driving technical workstreams to closure.
- Experience improving runbooks and automation, and contributing to production incident response and prevention.
- Ownership mindset for end-to-end database architecture (transaction store modernization, MySQL to Oracle strategy, or multi-site replication and DR patterns).
- Ability to set standards and act as an escalation point for complex performance and replication or DR tradeoffs.
- Experience mentoring engineers or DBAs, aligning across teams, and influencing roadmap decisions with measurable operational outcomes.
- Experience establishing engineering rigor through design reviews, operational readiness gates, and evidence-based performance validation.
