Data Engineer I (AWS, Databricks)
Job Description
Travelers is hiring a Data Engineer I to design, build, and deploy data solutions on AWS and Databricks to support AI/ML and business intelligence across the enterprise; this role is onsite in Hartford, CT.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and operationalize complex data solutions; troubleshoot issues, apply transformations, and propose data cleansing and quality improvements.
- Architect and design data solutions to meet analytic needs.
- Assess data sources to determine value and identify data to include in analytical processes.
- Incorporate core data management practices including governance, security, and quality.
- Collaborate across teams to support delivery and educate end users on data products and the analytic environment.
- Analyze data and systems, assess defects and incidents of moderate complexity, and implement appropriate resolutions.
- Validate data movement, transformation pipelines, and data components through testing.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM field or equivalent.
- Six years of related experience.
- Strong data engineering fundamentals with hands-on experience designing, building, and optimizing data pipelines.
- Proficiency with cloud platforms and modern data technologies, including:
- AWS: Lambdas, EventBridge, Step Functions, DynamoDB, Athena
- Databricks: Notebooks, Jobs, Unity Catalog, Genie; concepts such as Autoloader, streaming, near real-time processing
- Experience with AI tools and concepts (for example Claude) and familiarity with developer productivity tools such as GitHub Copilot.
- Comfort with key engineering and DevOps tools such as Jira, GitHub, Snyk, ServiceNow, and Autosys.
- Proficient programming skills and solid software engineering practices, including testing, CI/CD, and version control.
- Ability to deliver work at a steady, predictable pace, break down complex tasks into incremental releases, and participate in trade-off discussions.
- Demonstrated domain expertise with the ability to quickly understand technical concepts and develop deep knowledge of supported systems.
- Strong problem-solving and debugging skills, including root-cause analysis in unfamiliar codebases and resolving recurring issues.
- Strong verbal and written communication for effective collaboration with team members, partners, and stakeholders.
- Intermediate leadership skills with self-motivation, ownership, and commitment to continuous learning and growth.
- Two additional years of software or data engineering experience.

Compensation
- Salary range: $109,300.00 - $180,200.00 per year
- Actual salary determined by factors including role scope, location, skills, education, credentials, and experience
