Job Description

PNC Financial Services Group is seeking a Data Engineer to join its Big Data Platform team in Birmingham, Alabama. The role focuses on building and refining cloud-native data platforms, safeguarding health and performance, and enabling analytics for stakeholders across the organization. A Bachelor’s degree and at least three years of relevant experience are expected to support the design and operation of scalable data solutions.

Location: Birmingham, AL (onsite). Salary: USD 86,250 – 172,500 per year. Experience: minimum 3 years. Education: Bachelor’s degree.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor, maintain, and improve the health and performance of the data platform
  • Ensure stability, reliability, and scalability of data systems
  • Adhere to platform operations and data engineering standards, and promote best practices across technical and business teams
  • Regularly review the data platform architecture to identify opportunities for automation, optimization, right-sizing, and cost reduction
  • Lead user migrations to a unified data platform
  • Modernize legacy Hadoop-based systems toward cloud-native architectures
  • Design and build scalable, modern data platforms using open-source technologies such as Apache Iceberg, Airflow, and Trino
  • Implement data lakehouse architectures to ensure structured and transactional data availability
  • Partner with business stakeholders to translate analytical needs into technical solutions
  • Apply contemporary methodologies and tools to advance business initiatives and capabilities
  • Act as an internal consultant on big data tools and capabilities
  • Enhance and optimize query performance and data structures to support analytics
  • Guide stakeholders in leveraging data for business insights
  • Define and implement internal process improvements through analytics that inform key performance metrics

Requirements

  • Strong proficiency in Python, Spark, and Scala
  • Solid background in SQL development and experience with enterprise databases (Oracle, Teradata, etc.)
  • Experience with modern cloud-native and open-source tools such as Apache Iceberg, Apache Airflow, and Trino
  • Extensive experience in modern data engineering and big data ecosystems/frameworks
  • Hands-on experience building scalable data platforms and analytics solutions using data lakehouse architectures
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (Azure, AWS) and related data services
  • Ability to contribute to solution design beyond data movement
  • Strong communication and ability to bridge technical and non-technical audiences
  • Collaborative mindset with experience working across cross-functional teams
  • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking capabilities

Job Description

  • Develops, supports, and implements data services for multiple applications to meet business objectives, using technical expertise to design and maintain solutions
  • Collaborates with users, developers, operations, and business partners to define data service requirements and data preparation processes
  • Designs and builds data service infrastructure across multiple data platforms aligned with key processes and workflows
  • Develops and implements scalable, available, and maintainable data solutions for multiple applications
  • Executes data migration and transformation activities to ensure data accuracy and security

Pay Transparency

  • Base Salary: 86,250 – 172,500 USD per year
  • Salaries may vary by geographic location, market data, and individual skills, experience, and education
  • The role is incentive eligible based on company, business, and individual performance
