Job Description

Hands-on Data Enablement role at DataSF, helping City departments move data onto the Unified Data Platform.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain production data pipelines that deliver department data to the platform, including tests and documentation for maintainability by others.
  • Develop and test data models in dbt on Snowflake to turn raw department data into clean, well-documented tables used by City analysts.
  • Create financial and budget data products using City financial and workforce systems to support migration off legacy reporting and provide accurate numbers for budgeting and planning.
  • Support platform cost and usage reporting so the team and partner departments can understand platform expenses and resource utilization.
  • Assist in transitioning publishing workflows from legacy systems to the platform, including public-facing open data feeds.
  • Investigate and resolve data quality issues by tracing errors to their source, fixing problems, and adding tests to prevent recurrence.
  • Support department onboarding by helping analysts understand and use the models developed.
  • Participate in code review and progress toward reviewing others’ code as experience grows.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in computer science, computer engineering, information systems, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university, or an equivalent based on total course credits/units (minimum 60 semester or 90 quarter credits/units; with minimum 20 semester or 30 quarter credits/units in one of the listed fields).
  • 1 year of experience analyzing, installing, configuring, enhancing, and/or maintaining system or platform components.
  • 1 additional year of experience of the type described above may substitute for the required degree.
  • Completion of the 1010 Information Systems Trainee Program may substitute for the required degree.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience building real data-moving or data-transforming projects (job, internship, or personal) with the ability to explain design and challenges.
  • Ability to write SQL and familiarity with at least one programming language, ideally Python.
  • Strong attention to numerical accuracy and strong instincts for when data looks incorrect.
  • Experience with financial, budget, or ERP data is a plus, plus familiarity with dbt, Snowflake, or Terraform.
  • Strong potential and intuition working with data, with ability to learn new tools and the platform stack on the job.

Employment Details

  • Location: San Francisco, CA (hybrid)
  • Experience level: Minimum 1 years
  • Position type: Permanent Exempt (PEX), full time, excluded by Charter from competitive civil service examination; serves at the discretion of the appointment officer.
  • Project duration: Anticipated 36 months; project-based roles cannot be ongoing or exceed 36 months.
