Data Engineer

Based onsite in Whitehall, Michigan, Howmet Aerospace invites a Data Engineer to join Howmet Research Center, where data scientists and ML engineers collaborate to turn manufacturing data into dependable datasets for machine learning, reporting, and visualization. The role emphasizes collaboration with plant personnel and IT teams across sites, with international travel up to 50 percent to support operations in France, the United Kingdom, and Germany.

Responsibilities

• Travel up to 50% of the time, including international assignments to France, the United Kingdom, and Germany.
• Collaborate with manufacturing plant personnel to understand the detailed manufacturing process and the data collection user interfaces.
• Engage with corporate and local IT to map data storage and sources linked to the plant process, and identify efficient querying approaches.
• Query multiple data sources and join the data to accurately represent the process.
• Explore data to identify edge cases, cleaning requirements, and bias, applying statistics as necessary.
• Down-select, augment, and clean the dataset.
• Iterate these steps to generate a representative and reliable dataset, validate your work, and explain it to stakeholders at multiple levels of the organization.
• Collaborate with Data Scientists and Machine Learning Engineers to understand model input requirements.
• Transform the data to meet machine learning model input requirements.
• Provide post-modeling functions to translate model results into process-relatable values.
• Actively participate in elevating proof-of-concept code toward production-ready scripts.
• Document projects in PowerPoint and reusable code, storing work in a revision-controlled system.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Data Analysis, Data Science, Computer Science, or Information Systems
• Must have experience in basic SQL querying skills
• Demonstrated ability to transform data with a programming language
• Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio)
• Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
