Job Description
Research Corporation of the University of Hawaii is seeking a CIMAR PIFSC PSD Database System Developer to support marine ecosystem science through advanced programming and data systems work. This role focuses on building and maintaining data architecture and improving data accessibility to support research missions, data products, and ongoing coordination across teams and partners.
Role focus
The CIMAR PIFSC PSD Database System Developer provides advanced support spanning relational database development, scripting and automation, and project management coordination. Work includes developing, testing, maintaining, and documenting data architecture, as well as supporting the integrity, usability, and accessibility of scientific data before, during, and after research activities.
Responsibilities
- Provide advanced programming, relational database, and project management support for marine ecosystem science.
- Develop, test, maintain, and document the project’s data architecture and data accessibility.
- Support applications, computer procedures, and scripts to maintain data integrity, accessibility, and usability.
- Develop database management applications to manipulate, integrate, and disseminate data in raw and summarized forms.
- Coordinate with project staff on the collection, capture, processing, documentation, presentation, archiving, and maintenance of scientific data, data products, and reports.
- Provide project management support, coordinating activities, timelines, deliverables, resources, and priorities across multidisciplinary teams and partners.
- Track project progress and deliverables, identify data management and technical requirements, and facilitate communication to keep work aligned with established objectives.
- Develop procedures and processes to import and export data between various database management systems.
- Contribute to inventory and archiving of data holdings and backups in original and electronic forms, including data products.
- Provide advanced data systems support to researchers and staff before, during, and after research missions.
- Work with internal and external end-users to identify desirable and useful database structures.
- Collaborate with data management teams and partner agencies to develop and coordinate data tools and products.
Minimum requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in a Computer, Physical, or Biological Science field.
- Five to seven (5-7) years of professional level work experience, including relational database design and support, and programming using state of the art languages, scripts, and editors in both UNIX/Linux and personal computer environments.
- One to three (1-3) years of experience overseeing project work performance.
- Operational experience with database management systems for large scientific data sets, including time series and geographic data.
- At least one (1) year of supervisory experience.
- Working knowledge of relational database management software such as Oracle or MySQL, and dynamic Web tools such as PHP, JavaScript, and HTML.
- Working knowledge of programming and scripting languages such as Python, R, C/C++, and Procedural Language/Structured Query Language (PL/SQL).
- Demonstrated knowledge of versioning software, for example Git/GitHub.
- Must be able to meet and maintain United States Department of Commerce (DOC) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) security requirements to access the work location.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident Alien.
- Demonstrated skills providing advanced scientific programming support in Python, R, Powershell, and SQL interfacing languages, plus database form and report generators.
- Ability to design, create, maintain, improve, and document large and complex data management systems.
- Ability to translate end-user requirements into database design specifications.
- Ability to perform project management functions, including planning, organizing, and implementing projects to meet programmatic requirements and objectives within schedule, setting priorities, and coordinating multiple tasks with frequent and tight deadlines.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to lead and oversee work objectives.
- Strong project management and problem-solving skills with teamwork and minimal supervision.
- Demonstrated ability to create required applications.
- Must meet DOC and NOAA security requirements for working in a Federal facility, including fingerprinting and a Federal background check prior to hire and maintained throughout employment.
- Must complete UH Information Security Awareness Training (ISAT) within two (2) weeks from date of hire and re-certify every twelve (12) months.
- Comfortable working in small and confined areas; able to lift up to thirty-five (35) pounds, negotiate step ladders, narrow ship passageways, and access ports.
- Must be able to obtain NOAA Medical Clearance for embarking and working on NOAA research vessels or other appropriate vessels, including proof of required immunizations and/or obtaining immunizations as required by NOAA Marine and Aviation Operations, and maintain it throughout employment.

Secondary qualifications
- Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Business Administration or Computer Science-related discipline.
- Experience with image catalogs and spatial data objects.
- Experience with Perl or Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) programming language.
- Experience with advanced software tools for data visualization.
- Experience using routine statistical procedures to perform data analyses, including interpretation of results.
- Desire to contribute to conservation and sustainable management of living marine resources and protected species.

Work location and pay
- Location: In person, Honolulu, HI
- Salary: $6,300.00 - $8,000.00 per month
