Job Description

QXO is building AI-powered takeoff capabilities through its new Takeoff team, focused on measuring buildings and forecasting materials and bills of materials using plans, drawings, imagery, and 3D models. As a Staff Software Engineer, you will own the measurement engine and lead the productionization of AI systems with an emphasis on scale, reliability, and practical evaluation.

Responsibilities

  • Architect the measurement engine by designing and building systems that extract measurements from aerial imagery, plans, drawings, and 3D models, then convert them into accurate, explainable quantities.
  • Forecast what it takes to build by developing models that translate measurements into materials, including quantities, waste, and complementary products, and that improve based on real orders and job outcomes.
  • Put AI into production by taking LLM, machine learning, and computer vision capabilities from prototype to production using clear accuracy targets, evaluation harnesses, and appropriate human review.
  • Build for scale by designing services that support high volumes of measurement and estimation requests with low latency, high reliability, and cost discipline, and by exposing capabilities to web, mobile, internal tools, and partner platforms.
  • Expand across lines of business by extending a single takeoff platform from roofing into insulation, siding, waterproofing, decking, and beyond, enabling faster delivery of new lines.
  • Engineer AI-native workflows by applying AI agents across the software lifecycle, including design, code, testing, and operations, and by creating tooling, patterns, and review practices that increase team speed while maintaining quality.
  • Shape technical direction by partnering with product, UX, and sales engineering leaders, as well as takeoff experts, and by using rigorous technical evaluation to inform build, buy, and partner decisions.
  • Raise the bar through mentorship, leading design reviews, and setting expectations for accuracy, quality, and operational excellence.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of experience designing, building, and operating production software systems, including technical leadership across complex, cross-team projects.
  • Hands-on experience shipping AI and machine learning systems in production, including practical experience with LLMs.
  • Experience building high-scale measurement, estimation, or forecasting systems, including defining accuracy metrics and iterating to improve them over time.
  • Strong foundation in distributed systems, data pipelines, and service design for high-volume, low-latency workloads.
  • An AI-native engineering practice, including daily use of AI coding agents and tools and experience building evaluations, guardrails, or tooling around AI systems.
  • Ability to translate ambiguous problems into clear technical designs and to explain tradeoffs to engineering and business partners in plain language.
