Job Description

Southwest Airlines seeks a Senior Software Engineer to support Ground Operations’ Workforce Strategy and Planning applications. In this hybrid Dallas, TX role, you will help evolve a modern platform that replaces the current long-term workforce planning solution, with responsibilities spanning design, delivery, testing, release, and ongoing support.

Role Focus

Work on workforce optimization products for a large-scale cloud environment. The position includes technical leadership responsibilities, mentoring Software Engineers, and contributing to a feature roadmap for complex systems that support workforce strategy and planning use cases.

Responsibilities

  • Set technical direction and help define the feature roadmap for large-scale cloud systems
  • Serve as a technical lead, contributing to and directing development efforts across internal and external team members
  • Determine operational feasibility by evaluating analysis, problem definition, requirements, solution development, and proposed solutions
  • Drive detailed feature requirement definition through collaboration with product managers and customers
  • Support continuous improvement by evaluating alternatives and new technologies
  • Prepare and implement solutions by determining and designing system specifications, standards, and programming
  • Evaluate code for validity, structure, industry standards, and compatibility with browsers, devices, and operating systems
  • Mentor Software Engineers through advice, coaching, and training opportunities to support skill and knowledge growth
  • Maintain job knowledge by studying state-of-the-art development tools, programming techniques, and computing equipment; participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; and participating in professional organizations
  • Perform other job duties as directed by Employee’s Leaders

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information systems or similar fields of study, or equivalent advanced level experience
  • Advanced-level experience with seasoned, specialized knowledge in software development and methodologies
  • Ability to articulate ideas, approach, concepts, options, risk, impact, and guidance to technical, non-technical, and Leadership audiences (verbal and visual)
  • Ability to lead multiple assignments, including administrative or project-related work, while maintaining successful completion of responsible tasks
  • Ability to mentor others
  • Ability to lead ideating, presentations, mentoring, and group-thinking sessions
  • Ability to influence without authority
  • Ability to communicate and interact in English to meet job demands
  • Ability to use a computer and other office productivity tools with sufficient speed and accuracy
  • Ability to maintain a well-groomed appearance per Company appearance standards
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Ability to comply with Company attendance standards
  • Ability to travel and/or attend Company and non-Company facilities and remote locations as necessary

  • Practical experience with AWS DynamoDB
  • Hands-on experience with AWS cloud services and CI/CD practices
  • Knowledge of relational and NoSQL databases
  • Familiarity with Docker and Kubernetes

Compensation

  • Competitive market salary: $138,800 to $154,200 per year, depending on qualifications and experience
  • For eligible Leadership and individual contributor roles, additional bonus opportunities may be available and are awarded at the discretion of the company

Work Location and Schedule

  • Dallas, TX (hybrid)
  • Voluntary remote work is available for the majority of working time within the Dallas-Fort Worth area
  • Occasional on-site presence may be required at the Corporate Campus for training, meetings, and business needs
  • Limited travel for business purposes may be required
