Job Description
CHAOS Industries is building software for long-range electro-optical and infrared sensor systems that operate as one. This onsite role on the electro-optical team supports a field-first development culture where your code is exercised from early commits through simulation, hardware-in-the-loop, and end-to-end tests. You will also help keep deployed systems healthy with monitoring and live fixes for edge hardware at test and customer sites.
What you’ll build
- Software designed to work across sensor types, keeping the code generic across multiple camera heads and configurations while still meeting performance targets and adapting to mission and customer demands.
- A practical path from desk to field, using harnesses and graphs that reduce manual effort while taking capabilities from first commit through simulation and hardware-in-the-loop to complete end-to-end test runs.
- Autonomous field testing that runs full tests against real hardware at test sites on its own and reports back results.
- More test coverage earlier by improving simulation and replay so features are proven before they touch hardware.
- Multi-sensor integration, including interfaces, timing, and data flow that allow radar, cameras, and other sensors to function together as a single system.
- Fielded software capabilities such as deployment, monitoring, and live fixes for systems running on edge hardware at test and customer locations.
Required background
- 3+ years of professional software engineering with ownership of a production system end to end, including designing, shipping, and fixing it in real life.
- A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- Strong Python, including building services and tools that other engineers rely on, not just scripts and notebooks.
- Comfort with Linux, Docker, networking, and CI, with experience bringing a multi-service system up on hardware you have not previously used.
- Ability to use AI coding tools such as Cursor or Claude Code effectively, with a thoughtful view on what to delegate and what not to.
- Grounding in the physical world, including the ability to read a schematic, understand a test rack, and collaborate with optics or RF engineers (through education, hardware or sensor work, robotics, or field experience).
- Willingness to do field work, including debugging and shipping fixes before the next flight.
- A measurement-driven approach: build the experiment, then trust the data.
Tools you may use
Python, Linux, Docker, Cursor, Claude Code, MATLAB, Simulink, CI, GStreamer, DeepStream, NVIDIA Jetson, GPU, CUDA, C++, TypeScript, Gazebo, Isaac Sim, Unreal.
Benefits
- Medical, dental, and vision benefits 100% paid by the company
- 401k with +50% company match up to 6% of pay
- FSA, HSA, life insurance, and more
- Free daily lunch while working onsite
- Fully-stocked kitchen
- Unlimited PTO
- Casual dress code
- Relocation assistance
- Pre-IPO stock option grants
- Annual bonuses (coming soon)
Role scope
- This role is not algorithm research, physics modeling in MATLAB/Simulink, applied machine learning training, or pure DevOps.
Nice to have
- Cameras, EO/IR sensors, gimbals, radar, or video pipelines such as GStreamer or DeepStream
- Embedded Linux or edge computing, especially NVIDIA Jetson, plus GPU/CUDA work
- Robotics, autonomous vehicles, drones, or aerospace
- Hardware-in-the-loop test rigs or test automation against real hardware
- Simulation or game-engine work (Gazebo, Isaac Sim, Unreal, or similar)
- Building AI agent harnesses or workflow graphs
- C++ or TypeScript
- Defense or aerospace experience, or a current U.S. security clearance
Location and eligibility
- Onsite in El Segundo, CA
- Regular travel to test sites and field deployments
- U.S. Person status required due to access to U.S.-only data systems
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance
Compensation: USD 154,000 to 211,000 per year.
