Job Description

Apply for an experienced Software Engineer role supporting mission-critical systems and teams in the U.S. intelligence community.

Requirements

  • Drug testing: All applicants and employees are subject to random drug testing in accordance with Executive Order 12564.
  • Relevant experience: Must be in the software development process (requirements analysis, software design, implementation, testing, integration, deployment/installation, maintenance) and programming.
  • FULL PERFORMANCE entry:
    • Bachelor’s degree + 3 years of relevant experience, or
    • Master’s degree + 1 year of relevant experience, or
    • Doctoral degree with no experience
  • Entry via additional education path: Associate’s degree + 5 years of relevant experience for individuals with in-depth experience clearly related to the position.
  • SENIOR entry:
    • Bachelor’s degree + 6 years of relevant experience, or
    • Master’s degree + 4 years of relevant experience, or
    • Doctoral degree + 2 years of relevant experience
  • Additional consideration: Associate’s degree + 8 years of relevant experience may be considered for individuals with in-depth experience clearly related to the position.
  • Degree: Must be in Computer Science or Software Engineering.
  • Related fields: May be considered relevant if the program includes, at minimum, concentration in algorithms; computer architecture (not network architecture); programming methodologies and languages; data structures; logic and computation; and advanced mathematics (for example, calculus, discrete mathematics).
  • Minimum qualifications: Degree must demonstrate a concentration of computer science courses in foundational CS areas.
  • Accreditation requirement: When relying on education to meet qualification requirements, provide only attendance and/or degrees from schools accredited by accrediting institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
  • Application completeness: Failure to provide all required information may result in an ineligible rating or affect the overall rating.

How You Will Be Evaluated

  • Evaluation is based on how well you meet the qualifications above.
  • Industry norms may include Docker, AWS, GitLab, open source contributions (examples available at code.nsa.gov), and experience across relational and non-relational databases and languages such as Java, C, C++, and Python.
  • Candidates with experience in COBOL or IBM mainframe are preferred.
  • Strong background or interest may be considered in:
    • Advanced mathematics (number theory, abstract algebra, linear algebra, probability theory, discrete mathematics)
    • Data structures, algorithms, operating systems, and computer architecture
    • Proficiency in C/C++, Python, and Java
    • Symmetric and asymmetric cryptography, including hash functions, encryption, digital signatures, and key exchange
    • TLS/SSL and network security principles for secure communications
    • Hardware security modules (HSMs) and other secure computing cloud platforms
    • SIEM, IDS, and vulnerability assessment tools
    • Cryptographic libraries, APIs, and adherence to security standards (NIST, ISO 27001, OWASP guidelines)
  • Teamwork, leadership, and good interpersonal skills may be considered.
  • Prior Intelligence Community experience is preferred.
