Software Engineer
Job Description
Mid-to-senior Software Engineer role supporting a research and development effort for AFRL through population simulation and related back-end technical solutions.
Responsibilities
- Research, develop, design, modify, write, implement, and test software for population simulation
- Partner with customers and end users to define requirements and convert them into an achievable project timeline
- Collaborate across Agile teams to design, develop, test, implement, and support back-end solutions
- Write well-designed, testable, and efficient code, primarily in Java (also using other languages as needed)
- Recommend improvements to established application processes
- Prepare and produce software component releases
- Provide technical support and consultation for application and infrastructure questions
Requirements
- Minimum 5 years of experience in a software engineering role
- Experience designing, building, scaling, and maintaining production software
- Assist with architecture requirements and establishing design and development standards
- Consult with management and customers on product feasibility, viability, and product plan and design discussions
- Incorporate emerging technologies and supportability into design and implementation
- Strong coding practices focused on quality and testability
- Proficiency with Java and Python
- Strong understanding of DevOps and software/application development processes
- Demonstrated experience with continuous integration and software CM processes/tools, including GitLab, JIRA, Confluence, Jenkins, Nexus, and other DevOps/CI tools
- Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases, including query optimization

Clearance

Travel
- Less than 10% travel
- Includes a two-week stay in Rome, NY
- Occasional trips to the DMV area to collaborate with the managing team
Desired Skills
- Bachelor’s Degree desired, not required (experience in lieu of a degree will be considered)
- Experience with population simulation or other data simulation
- Experience leading a software development effort across the full spectrum of government Modeling and Simulation environments
- Experience with geospatial engineering
- Experience with big data processing tools, such as Spark/Hadoop, Google BigQuery, AWS Athena, and EMR
- Experience with public clouds such as AWS, Google, or Azure
- Strong data visualization skills
Additional Experience
- Provide product demonstrations and participate in trade shows, seminars, industry panels, and user group meetings
- Experience acquiring client requirements and resolving workflow problems through automation optimization
- Interact with customers regarding strategies, requirements, problem-solving, and support
