Machine Learning Engineer
Job Description
Layup Parts is seeking a Machine Learning Engineer to build custom machine learning models using the company’s internal manufacturing and design data. The work is centered on geometry-driven capabilities, including cost estimation, predicting design complexity or manufacturing difficulty, and extracting structured information from engineering documents and drawings.
Role Overview
This onsite position is based in Huntington Beach, CA. The salary range for the role is USD 120,000 - 185,000 per year.
Responsibilities
- Train and iterate on custom ML models using Layup’s internal manufacturing and design datasets.
- Develop models that estimate cost and predict design complexity or manufacturing difficulty based on part geometry.
- Create models that can generate or support generating new designs using historical design data.
- Build data pipelines to extract structured data (such as specifications, dimensions, and material callouts) from existing engineering documents and drawings.
- Evaluate and select modeling approaches that fit geometric, spatial, and other structured data, rather than text-based problem settings.
- Partner with engineering and manufacturing teams to source, clean, and label internal datasets.
- Own model performance end-to-end, covering the data pipeline, training, evaluation, and deployment into internal tools.
- Continuously identify opportunities where custom models could improve design workflows, estimation, and manufacturing processes.
Requirements
- Experience training custom models beyond basic labeling or simple fine-tuning workflows.
- Experience with advanced object detection (data classification experience is a strong plus).
- Geometry-based modeling experience is highly preferred.
- Experience working with large, parameter-rich datasets.
- Strongest fit is a background focused on structured, spatial, or geometric data problems, rather than natural language or LLM-centric work.
Benefits
- Full Benefits Package: Medical, dental, and vision coverage; short- and long-term disability insurance; company-paid life insurance.
- Equity option grants.
- 401k plan.
- Paid time off: Unlimited PTO plus 9 Federal Holidays.
Bonus Points
- Experience training geometry-specific models.
- CAD experience.
- Manufacturing experience.
