Lead Software Engineer - AI Coding

NYU Langone Health is looking for a Lead Software Engineer to design, develop, and maintain custom software applications powered by advanced AI coding tools. This onsite role in New York, NY combines hands-on engineering with technical leadership across onshore and offshore teams, with a focus on secure, scalable web solutions and production-grade reliability, supported by a comprehensive wellness and benefits program.

What you’ll do

• Use advanced AI coding tools to generate source code that implements sprint features defined during sprint planning.
• Build test harnesses and quality gates to ensure AI-generated code meets standards before it reaches production.
• Lead and coordinate engineering execution for sprint goals, including estimating story points during daily standups and scrum ceremonies.
• Implement production-ready engineering practices, including error handling, logging, graphing key metrics, graceful failure, and tuning timeouts appropriately.
• Support operational readiness through best practices for security, unit testing, DevOps, and instrumentation that drive an “operate” strategy.
• Provide guidance to junior developers and offshore engineers to improve delivery consistency and engineering maturity.
• Plan and deliver production deployments as needed.
• Evaluate tools and technologies and provide analysis and recommendations for future improvements.
• Contribute to continuous improvement using strategies aligned to a published maturity model to enhance operational viability and overall product maturity.
• Participate in a 24x7x365 on-call rotation, providing support during production outages off-hours.

What you bring

• BS or MS in engineering or computer science (or equivalent experience).
• 8+ years building custom software solutions using at least two modern, object-oriented programming and/or scripting languages with a web application framework.
• 2+ years as a tech lead directing engineering efforts, delegating work, and serving as a liaison to engineers onshore and offshore to accomplish sprint goals.
• Expert knowledge of web technologies including HTTP/2, TLS encryption, caching, web browsers, cookies, HTTP headers, HTML, JavaScript, and CSS.
• Expert knowledge of using an advanced AI coding tool with spec driven development (SDD) and building harnesses for coding agents.
• Expert knowledge of Unix operating systems such as RHEL/CentOS and Ubuntu.
• Expert knowledge of Git, including branches, code reviews, tags, and related workflows.
• Experience with unit testing frameworks and writing unit tests as part of the development process.
• Expert knowledge of agile scrum methodology and experience working on a scrum team.
• Expert knowledge of relational databases, including normalized schema design, schema/index creation, SQL query writing, and troubleshooting performance issues.
• Expert knowledge of creating REST APIs and REST standards using tools that automatically generate API documentation.
• Full stack development capabilities across front end (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React) and backend scripting languages (Python, PHP) for feature development, unit testing, instrumentation, and debugging.
• Working knowledge of one cloud computing platform and managing infrastructure with infrastructure as code tools.
• Working knowledge of DevOps tools including Jenkins (or equivalent) to create pipelines for automatically deploying and validating releases.
• Working knowledge of test automation tools and integrating tests into pipelines, including functional, service, contract, and networking failure-mode tests.
• Ability to troubleshoot and resolve production issues at the application, networking, and OS level and provide Tier 2 production support.

Salary

USD 121,792 - 166,950 per year.
