Lead Data Engineer
Job Description
Deloitte’s AI & Data team is building and operating enterprise data foundations that enable consistent analytics and scalable engineering delivery. As a Lead Data Engineer II based in McLean, VA (onsite), you will set direction for enterprise data architecture, standardize canonical data models, and provide technical oversight across data engineering execution. The role also includes directing data migration planning and cutover support while partnering closely with data scientists, analysts, and business stakeholders.
This position offers a salary range of USD 110,700 to 174,600 per year and requires 5+ years of relevant experience and a bachelor’s degree.
What You’ll Do
- Define and govern enterprise data architecture, including logical and physical data models, database schemas, and hierarchical and recursive data structures.
- Design and oversee canonical data models, including ontology structures and platform data standards that support consistency, scalability, and system performance.
- Provide technical oversight of data engineering delivery through pipeline design, schema change reviews, code review, quality controls, and architectural approvals.
- Direct data migration planning and execution by managing sequencing, mapping, validation, reconciliation, rollback planning, and issue resolution during cutover.
- Collaborate with data scientists, analysts, and business stakeholders to align architecture decisions with operational requirements and future analytical needs.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree.
- 5+ years designing database architectures, including recursive and hierarchical data structures.
- 4+ years with Structured Query Language (SQL) and data modeling across relational, dimensional, and graph-oriented models.
- 4+ years with PySpark and extract, transform, load (ETL) and extract, load, transform (ELT) pipeline tooling.
- Ability to obtain and maintain the required clearance for this role.
- Travel up to 25% on average, based on work with clients and industry/sectors served.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future.
