Job Description

Compunnel Inc. is seeking an Embedded Software Engineer to support body controls software architecture and delivery, with a focus on integration, validation, and functional safety for automotive systems. The role is onsite in Palo Alto, CA.

Role Focus

You will drive the evolution of body controls software architecture, translating vehicle-level goals into software specifications, and working through early hardware and software integration. A key part of the position involves building and validating state machine behavior from provided scenarios, alongside functional safety analyses for body control systems.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the evolution of body controls software architecture, developing solutions and defining hardware and software interfaces.
  • Coordinate early-stage hardware and software integration and validate system performance against stringent requirements.
  • Convert high-level vehicle objectives into detailed software specifications for body control systems.
  • Use field data to continuously refine and optimize body control performance.
  • Partner with validation teams to design test strategies for body control functionalities.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex hardware and software interactions across the product lifecycle.
  • Evaluate design changes and determine their impact on both hardware and software components.
  • Support functional safety execution using DFMEA and HARA analyses for body control systems.
  • Advise cross-functional engineering groups on technical decisions spanning electrical, software, manufacturing, and mechanical domains.
  • Enable cross-functional alignment on system interdependencies to support seamless vehicle-domain integration.

Requirements

  • Technical degree in a relevant field (for example: Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering).
  • Proficiency in C/C++ and familiarity with scripting languages such as Python.
  • Strong problem-solving capabilities for complex, networked embedded systems.
  • Ability to interpret data to optimize system performance.
  • Familiarity with hardware and software development lifecycles.
  • Proven experience leading collaborative engineering projects.
  • Solid understanding of electrical engineering principles and mechatronic systems.
  • Experience with CAN and/or LIN communication protocols and related tools.
  • Knowledge of DFMEA, HARA, and fault tree analysis methodologies.
  • Ability to design and draw a state machine diagram based on a provided scenario.
  • They will have to do a state machine diagram on glider and then with KCS.
  • Ability to visually construct a state machine diagram is required.

Applicable Skills

  • 10+ years of embedded software and systems engineering experience, with strong development in C/C++ and Python across automotive, firmware, and safety-critical platforms.
  • Automotive background including experience supporting QNX and Android vehicle platforms, leading hardware and software integration, root-cause analysis, and system-level performance validation.
  • Hands-on experience with vehicle networking and embedded diagnostics including CAN, LIN, ECU/ECM architectures, UART, SPI, and I2C.
  • Functional safety experience aligned to ISO 26262 and ASIL-D, including safety-relevant analysis practices.
  • Track record translating complex system requirements into scalable test, validation, and observability solutions, supporting OTA software releases and cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Troubleshooting and integration expertise across hardware and software domains, including debugging embedded systems and analyzing field data.

  • Experience supporting body control system functionality and performance across a product lifecycle.
  • Experience with electric vehicle systems and architectures.
  • Interest in automotive technology and shaping vehicle experiences.

Work Location, Hours, and Pay

  • Work location: In person (Palo Alto, CA onsite)
  • Expected hours: 40.0 hours per week
  • Pay: USD 55 - 60 per hour
