Data Engineer II
Job Description
EchoStar is hiring a Data Engineer II for an onsite role in Englewood, CO. This position focuses on building high-performance data pipelines for both batch and streaming processing using AWS and Apache Spark, while leading proof-of-concept work that explores workflow orchestration and Generative AI automation to improve data quality, documentation, and governance.
Compensation: USD 83,160 - 118,800 per year. Candidates must be able to complete a pre-employment screen, which may include a drug test and a DMV check. The active posting will remain live for a minimum of 3 days and will extend by 3 days until the role is filled.
What you’ll do
- Design, build, and optimize scalable data pipelines for batch and streaming data from internal and external sources
- Develop and manage processing jobs using Apache Spark on Amazon EMR clusters, balancing performance, cost-efficiency, and scalability
- Implement transformation logic and complex workflows primarily with Python, PySpark, and SQL
- Lead a proof-of-concept evaluating Apache Airflow as an enterprise workflow orchestration tool, including designing and deploying Directed Acyclic Graphs (DAGs)
- Explore integration points for Amazon Q into data pipelines for automated data quality checks, data documentation generation, or pipeline optimization as part of the orchestration POC
- Implement CI/CD for data platform components using GitLab, using Infrastructure-as-Code templates and maintaining data governance, security, and quality across the lifecycle
- Participate in at least one in-person interview
What you bring
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, or a related technical field
- Experience: at least 2 years in Big Data and Data Engineering
- At least 2 years each with: Python and SQL
- At least 2 years each with: Amazon EMR and Apache Spark
- At least 2 years each with: Apache Airflow or Control M
- At least 2 years with GitLab CI/CD pipelines
- At least 2 years with Amazon Q or other Generative AI tools
- Preferred: experience with Databricks
