Data Engineer II
Job Description
The Data Engineering team at The Travelers Companies, Inc. builds pipelines that contextualize enterprise data and make it accessible across the organization. In this Data Engineer II role, you will design, build, deploy, and operationalize complex data solutions that enable analytics, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and business intelligence or insights.
This onsite position is based in Hartford, CT, with an expected salary range of USD 126,500 to 208,700 per year. The role targets 1 opening.
What you will do
- Build and operationalize complex data solutions, including correcting problems, applying transformations, and recommending data cleansing and data quality improvements.
- Design complex data solutions and analyze complex data sources to identify value, use, and which data should be included in analytical processes.
- Apply core data management competencies across data governance, data security, and data quality.
- Collaborate within and across teams to support delivery and educate end users on complex data products and the analytic environment.
- Perform data and system analysis to assess, troubleshoot, and resolve complex defects and incidents, applying corrections as appropriate.
- Test data movement, transformation code, and data components to support reliable releases.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
What you bring
- Eight years of relevant experience.
- Proven experience building ETL pipelines using AWS, dbt, or other ETL tooling.
- Understanding of AWS cloud services and data architecture patterns, including S3, IAM, Lambda, and CloudWatch.
- Experience with data modeling techniques such as star / snowflake schema and data warehouse design principles.
- Nice to have: Experience with Ab Initio for enterprise-scale ETL development.
- Strong delivery skills, including selecting appropriate software design strategy and methodology, using automated tests, and using analysis and feedback loops to ensure quality and production readiness before release, as well as monitoring the health of work efforts and adjacent systems.
- Strong problem-solving approach using data and proofs of concept, including reflecting on solutions, measuring impact, and using findings to optimize outcomes.
- Excellent communication skills, including building business partnerships, explaining technology concepts for business audiences, documenting initiatives clearly and concisely, and listening attentively to other ideas.

Education
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, a related STEM field, or its equivalent in education and/or work experience.
Compensation and benefits
The annual base salary range provided for this position is a nationwide market range and represents a broad range of salaries for this role across the country. Actual salary will be determined by factors including scope, complexity, and location; candidate skills, education, training, credentials, and experience; and other conditions of employment. Employees may also be eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards.
