Job Description

Based in Seattle, WA on site, this Data Engineer II role contributes to Amazon Data Services, Inc.'s data infrastructure by designing, implementing, validating, and operating large-scale data structures that power business intelligence analytics.

Summary

The Data Engineer II role focuses on building and maintaining large-scale data structures to support BI analytics. Core activities include data modeling, ETL and ELT workflows, SQL and Oracle operations, OLAP technologies, OBIEE reporting, requirements gathering, alignment with the data architecture, lifecycle development, dataset documentation, tooling evaluations, and mentoring junior data engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Architect and optimize large-scale, high-volume data structures for business intelligence analytics.
  • Develop scalable data architectures to support BI workloads and analytics.
  • Implement data structures using established practices in data modeling, ETL/ELT, SQL, Oracle, and OLAP technologies.
  • Validate and test data structures to ensure reliability, performance, and accuracy.
  • Document data structures thoroughly, including metadata and usage guidelines.
  • Operate and monitor large-scale data infrastructures in production environments.
  • Deliver online reporting and analysis through OBIEE business intelligence tools.
  • Create a logical abstraction layer over large, multi-dimensional datasets from multiple sources.
  • Gather business and functional requirements and translate them into robust data solutions aligned with the data architecture.
  • Assess source data systems and promote best practices across source teams.
  • Participate in the full development life cycle from design to delivery, support, and maintenance.
  • Produce comprehensive dataset documentation and metadata for reuse and governance.
  • Evaluate dataset implementations proposed by peers and provide constructive feedback.
  • Evaluate the use of new or existing software products and tools.
  • Mentor junior data engineers to foster growth and knowledge transfer.

Requirements

  • Master's degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, Mathematics, or a related field, with one year of relevant experience.
  • Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, Mathematics, or a related field with five years of progressive post-baccalaureate experience, considered equivalent to the Master's degree and one year of experience.
  • One year of experience developing and operating large-scale data structures for BI analytics using ETL/ELT processes.
  • One year of experience with OLAP technologies in BI contexts.
  • One year of experience in data modeling for large-scale data structures.
  • One year of experience using SQL for data engineering tasks.
  • One year of experience with Oracle in data engineering environments.
