Camera Machine Learning Engineer
Job Description
Join Apple’s Camera Hardware Engineering team in Cupertino, CA (onsite) and help shape next-generation camera experiences through applied machine learning. This role blends research, hands-on model development, and hardware-focused evaluation, supporting ongoing improvement of Apple camera products from algorithm design through qualification and benchmarking.
What you’ll do
Responsibilities
- Research, design, and implement machine learning algorithms for camera tasks such as image and video processing, computational photography, and scene understanding.
- Partner with data collection teams to curate large-scale image and video datasets, then analyze and preprocess data to train and validate ML models effectively.
- Build and evaluate ML algorithm prototypes using rigorous testing and user feedback to measure real-world performance.
- Own the end-to-end research, design, development, test, and qualification of camera hardware for Apple products.
- Take responsibility for ongoing design, evaluation, benchmarking, and characterization of Apple camera products.
Requirements
- MS or Ph.D. in Machine Learning, EE, CS, Physics, Optics (or equivalent) with 3+ years of experience in machine learning research or relevant industry experience.
- Experience applying deep learning to computer vision tasks including object recognition, image segmentation, inpainting, and anomaly detection.
- Experience applying generative AI and reinforcement learning techniques to improve hardware design processes.
- Experience using advanced ML methods to optimize system architectures and improve image quality in a hardware design context.
- Experience with image quality metrics and evaluation methodology.
- Experience with camera components, functions, and the camera ISP pipeline.
- Experience with megapixel CMOS image sensor technology, lens selection, and qualification.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Optics, or a related field, plus 10 years of relevant experience.
- Python programming experience and deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch.
- Strong foundation in machine learning and computer vision principles and algorithms.
- Experience with camera and/or image sensor technologies.

Compensation & Benefits
Pay: Base pay range for this role is $184,700 to $277,600 per year. Base pay depends on skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
Incentives: This role might be eligible for discretionary bonuses or commission payments as well as relocation (as applicable).
