Job Description

Harris Computer Systems is hiring an Associate Software Engineer to support IBM i application development for regulated healthcare software in Tennessee. In this role, you will build practical experience with RPG and database logic while helping deliver safe, standards-aligned code changes through learning, testing, documentation, and deployment support.

You will work alongside a software team to understand existing application behavior, implement low-risk improvements under technical guidance, and progressively take on deployment validation and production-support activities once readiness and required access are confirmed.

What you’ll do

  • Learn IBM i application development, including RPG IV/ILE, free-format RPG, CL, Db2 for i SQL, and how to work with IBM i objects using approved development tools.
  • Review and trace existing RPG, SQL, CL, and related application logic (database, batch, and interactive flows) to understand behavior and identify affected areas.
  • Implement clearly defined, low-risk defect corrections, maintenance changes, test improvements, and small enhancements under technical guidance.
  • Create and execute unit tests, write maintainable code, and document updates including business rules, test evidence, and implementation considerations.
  • Join peer code reviews and participate in Agile ceremonies, estimation discussions, demonstrations, and retrospectives.
  • Apply review feedback and communicate progress, risks, and blockers promptly.
  • Follow secure-development, data-privacy, quality, release-management, source-control, and change-control standards for regulated healthcare software.
  • Use approved AI-assisted tools responsibly, with independent validation of generated analysis, code, documentation, and tests.
  • After demonstrating readiness and receiving required access and approvals, progressively assist with deployment validation and production support activities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or equivalent technical education, certification, structured training, or practical experience.
  • Zero to one year of professional software-development experience.
  • Relevant education, training, coursework, certification, or project experience may substitute for professional experience.
  • Foundational programming ability in at least one structured programming language.
  • Basic understanding of variables, logic, loops, procedures, debugging, error handling, and testing.
  • Basic knowledge of SQL and relational database concepts.
  • Ability to read existing code, trace program logic, and break a defined problem into manageable steps with guidance.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to work that is accurate, testable, documented, and aligned with standards.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with a cross-functional software-development team.
  • Willingness to ask questions, receive feedback, document learning, and continuously develop technical skills.
