Okta is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for Core Infrastructure to design, develop, and operate cloud-native shared infrastructure and services that support other engineering teams. This role emphasizes building reusable capabilities, scaling platform services, and maintaining high engineering standards through careful review and testing.
Role Scope
In this position, you will work across teams to plan and deliver cloud-based infrastructure projects using a modern technology stack. You will also evaluate and roll out common features and frameworks, operate and upgrade shared services as adoption increases, and ensure reliability through monitoring, troubleshooting, and performance tuning. Mentorship and technical guidance for junior developers are also core responsibilities.
Responsibilities
- Partner with engineering teams to design, develop, and deliver cloud-based infrastructure projects on a modern tech stack including Redis, Docker, and Terraform on AWS.
- Lead evaluation, development, and rollout of new shared features and frameworks.
- Operate, support, and upgrade shared services and frameworks, scaling them as usage grows.
- Perform design and code reviews and maintain programming quality through unit and functional tests.
- Monitor, troubleshoot, and resolve issues for services and frameworks owned by the team.
- Evaluate system performance and address bottlenecks.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior developers.
- Collaborate with architects, QA, product owners, security, and operations engineers.
Requirements
- Strong commitment to doing the right thing to help Okta’s technology stay ahead of expected business growth.
- Experience architecting, implementing, tuning, and debugging large-scale enterprise cloud deployments.
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science or equivalent (master’s preferred).
- 8+ years of programming experience in an object-oriented language such as Java, including backend services, with a strong understanding of multithreading, garbage collection, and memory management.
- 3+ years with MySQL or equivalent relational database systems, including experience designing databases and fine tuning queries (plus).
- 3+ years developing, operating, optimizing, and troubleshooting web services on Kubernetes, with experience on AWS EKS (plus) and GCP.
- Demonstrated experience with ReST and understanding of its fundamentals; knowledge of gRPC (plus).
- Experience with Spring, Spring Boot, Hibernate, Tomcat, AWS, Redis, and Docker.
- Knowledge of network security, authentication, and authorization.
- Track record of following best software engineering principles.
- Experience with enterprise SaaS (good-to-have).
- Familiarity with the Agile software development process.

Location and Compensation
San Francisco, CA (hybrid). Salary range: USD 194,000 - 267,000 per year.
