Decagon is seeking a Staff Software Engineer, Product to design and build systems that help customers configure, train, test, and monitor AI agents with confidence. This role owns product and engineering end to end, partnering closely with product and design while delivering self-serve configuration, deployment, and monitoring capabilities.
What You’ll Do
- Reduce manual effort by creating self-serve functionality for agent configuration, training, and deployment.
- Develop configuration abstractions that deliver both capability and simplicity, supporting diverse enterprise use cases while remaining usable by non-technical teams.
- Build AI-powered tooling so CX and operations teams can create and manage complex agent workflows without writing code.
- Implement monitoring, tracing, and analytics that provide actionable signal, helping customers understand where an agent is failing and why.
- Work on agentic systems at scale, contributing to critical flows used by Fortune 100 companies.
- Run evaluations on new text and voice models, and integrate winning models into production traffic.
What You Bring
- 7+ years of experience building software products with strong product thinking.
- Proficiency in Python and comfort working across the entire stack.
- Experience translating complex technical capabilities into interfaces that are simple and usable.
- Instincts for complex systems, including asynchronous programming and failure modes that appear at scale.
- Strong ability to debug system failures deep in technology stacks, using the tools needed to reach a root cause.
- A talent for turning customer requests into clear, well-scoped product and technical specifications.
- Good judgment on when to move quickly versus when to slow down to build correctly.
Team and Product Context
Decagon’s Product Engineering team builds the platform customers use to create, operate, and improve AI agents. The team turns engineering-heavy work into products that CX teams can run independently, with frameworks designed to support every agent in production. Each agent may have its own workflows, data, and constraints.
Because engineers build the agents themselves, lessons from production failures are translated into guardrails, evaluations, and tooling that help prevent the same issues across the platform. The agents support companies including Hertz, American Airlines, and Notion, operating across chat, voice, email, and SMS.
How the Role Operates
In this position, you will design and build the systems that enable customers to configure, train, test, and monitor sophisticated AI agents with confidence. The work combines strong engineering foundations with abstractions that hold up across varying use cases without splitting into separate implementations per customer.
You will collaborate daily with product and design, participating in discovery, defining requirements, reviewing designs, and iterating through launch. The role also involves staying close to customer needs to ensure the product built matches real use cases. Engineers here own features end to end, including technical architecture, deployment, and post-launch iteration.
Additional Considerations
- Experience with LLMs, prompt engineering, evals, or AI agent systems.
- Experience building developer tools, APIs, platforms, or internal tools that became customer-facing.
- Experience with observability, data visualization, or analytics products.
- Experience building security-sensitive product systems such as authentication and data access controls.
- Experience with multi-modal or voice models.
