Machine Learning Engineer

Apple’s Machine Intelligence Neural Design (MIND) team applies advanced machine learning research to products used by people every day. As a Machine Learning Engineer in Pittsburgh, PA, you’ll help take foundation model and perception work from experimentation into end-to-end training, production software, and on-device inference optimizations.

This onsite role centers on building practical ML systems, including training and evaluation pipelines, runtime inference infrastructure, and multimodal processing that supports real-time sensing and model prediction.

What you will do

• Build an end-to-end machine learning model training and evaluation pipeline
• Develop production ML software that integrates models and related functionality within Apple’s software infrastructure
• Create end-to-end demos for ML solutions
• Represent the team in cross-functional discussions
• Work across the full ML development pipeline, including dataset approaches, model training, runtime inference integration, and on-device model optimizations
• Collaborate with ML researchers, software/firmware engineers, and operations/data engineers to advance research and production efforts

Core responsibilities within the pipeline

• Deliver the pipeline required for model development and evaluation
• Integrate research outcomes into end products that apply the impact of foundation models and perception to Apple users
• Support efforts involving sensing modalities, including real-time sensing visualizations and model prediction

Requirements

• Proficient programming skills in Python and one of: JAX, PyTorch, or Tensorflow
• Experience with on-device ML model deployment and on-device optimization
• Experience handling multimodal data including text, images, audio, and other sensors
• Experience developing production software
• Proficiency in Swift, Objective C, C++, or Go
• BS or MS with 3-5 years of ML SW Engineering, or PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or relevant fields
• Strong foundation in machine learning, including classical ML models, DNNs, and multimodal foundation models
• Experience building model training and evaluation pipelines in Python/PyTorch
• Experience prototyping and developing software applications (preferably in Swift)
• Strong communication and presentation skills
• Ability to work collaboratively
