Job Description

Spectrum Control, Inc. is hiring an Embedded Software Engineer to design and implement infrastructure and applications for embedded Linux deployments. The role includes defining functional requirements, establishing testing methodologies, and supporting software that verifies system operation.

Role Overview

This position focuses on building and deploying an embedded Linux platform and delivering embedded application software for ARM-based processors. You will also develop networking infrastructure, create automated test software for RF measurement equipment, derive system requirements and verification methods, and maintain documentation. Internal and external customer support will be provided as needed.

On-site and Work Model

On-site expectations vary by development phase. During hardware bring-up, integration, and test periods, daily on-site presence at the bench is required. During design and software-focused phases, remote work is supported. There is no fixed weekly hybrid schedule; flexibility is required based on hardware needs.

Travel to the company’s manufacturing facility in Frederick, MD is required at least once per month. The role is based at a Spectrum Control facility in Marlborough, MA; Philadelphia, PA; Fairview, PA; or Delmar, DE. Candidates should be located within a reasonable commuting distance of one of these locations.

  • Maintain software revisions and deployment using GIT and Docker.
  • Develop high-quality embedded application software in C/C++ for ARM-based processors.
  • Develop computer networking software infrastructure.
  • Develop automated test software in C# to control RF test instruments such as signal generators, spectrum/network analyzers, and power meters, and to collect measurement data.
  • Use Artificial Intelligence tools to enhance productivity and problem solving.
  • Derive requirements and verification methods for embedded systems.
  • Produce detailed documentation of system functionality.
  • Provide internal and external customer support as needed.

  • Strong knowledge of computer networking protocols and tools, and computer architecture.
  • Strong C/C++ skills for embedded software on ARM-based processors, including cross-compilation toolchains, hardware interfaces (SPI, I2C, UART), and debugging with JTAG/GDB.
  • Strong scripting skills in Python and Bash for build automation and test tooling.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building embedded Linux for Altera or AMD FPGA SoCs.
  • Experience with C#/.NET for test applications.
  • Experience developing instrument control and test automation software using SCPI over VISA (including GPIB, LXI/Ethernet, USBTMC).
  • Knowledge of embedded security practices such as secure boot, encrypted filesystems, and signed software updates.
