Software Engineer II

Outpost Technologies is seeking a Software Engineer II for its Test and Evaluation team in Huntsville, AL (onsite). The role supports development of a digital scoring system for remote sensing platforms, with responsibilities spanning reliable software execution, verification, and maintenance of the platform and user interface.

Responsibilities

• Develop, expand, and maintain an existing software tool suite to strengthen lethality analysis and enhance Model & Simulation capabilities.
• Support software team planning for development and testing activities, including management of development life-cycle risks and leveraging frequent internal releases to improve feedback speed, reduce integration issues, and increase adaptability.
• Use critical thinking and broad expertise in modern computing to perform peer reviews, deliver constructive code feedback, and recommend test approaches that validate nominal behavior while identifying failure modes through stress testing.
• Demonstrate experience with formal, informal, and automated verification testing for highly reliable and available code, including writing automated tests beyond unit tests (such as integration and system-level tests) and applying dependency inversion and mocking techniques.
• Analyze system-level requirements to propose software designs and derive detailed software requirements aligned to system objectives.
• Communicate clearly about software designs, implementation approaches, and test strategies within a small development team, encouraging open discussion to align on technical and process decisions.
• Design, implement, and debug soft real-time systems using in-depth knowledge of 6 DOF digital twin physics-based simulations.
• Design, implement, and debug soft real-time systems using in-depth knowledge of hardware operations including serial ports, PCI bus, and Ethernet.
• Design, implement, and debug soft real-time systems with strong understanding of hardware-OS interactions, including UART HW FIFOs, ISRs, buffer management, hardware configuration, and Linux filesystem cache and flush timing.
• Design, implement, and debug soft real-time systems with strong understanding of application-OS interactions, including blocking vs. polling and multi-thread synchronization.
• Optimize CPU performance in soft real-time software by applying event-driven design approaches instead of polling.

Requirements

• Must be a US Citizen.
• Must hold an Active DoD Security Clearance at Secret level or higher.
• Possess a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in a relevant field (Electrical Engineering or Computer Science).
• Bring 3 - 10 years of software development experience.
• Proficiency with C/C++/Python and Linux/Windows.

Compensation and Location

Location: Huntsville, AL (onsite). Salary: USD 80,000 - 140,000 per year.
