Product Design & Software Engineer
Job Description
Dart Controls, LLC, a Zionsville, Indiana based leader in motor control solutions, is looking for a Product Design and Software Engineer to design, validate, and support electronic motor control products. This onsite role combines analog and digital circuit design with embedded firmware and PC-based software to deliver robust products from development through field performance, with a strong emphasis on safety and quality. The position requires close collaboration across engineering, manufacturing, quality, and sales teams to translate customer needs into reliable, manufacturable solutions.
Responsibilities
- Maintain a safety-first and quality-first approach across all aspects of design, development, testing, and support.
- Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory, safety, and quality requirements.
- Participate in design reviews, root-cause analysis, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Design new motor control products and enhance existing platforms.
- Develop electronic circuits, PCB layouts, and system architectures for AC, DC, and BLDC motor control applications.
- Build, troubleshoot, and evaluate prototypes through laboratory and bench testing.
- Perform validation and performance characterization of products.
- Create and maintain engineering documentation including schematics, bills of materials, test procedures, and design specifications.
- Support transitions of products from development into manufacturing and provide technical assistance to manufacturing teams.
- Offer technical support for existing products, troubleshooting hardware, firmware, and application-related issues.
- Investigate product failures and customer-reported issues to determine root causes and implement corrective actions.
- Develop product improvements based on field performance, customer feedback, and reliability data.
- Create and maintain technical documentation, application notes, and user support materials.
- Develop, maintain, and support PC-based software applications used for configuration, programming, monitoring, and diagnostics of motor control products.
- Develop, test, and maintain embedded firmware for microcontroller-based motor control systems, implementing control algorithms and necessary communication protocols.
- Ensure software and firmware reliability through rigorous verification and validation testing.
- Maintain software documentation, version control, and release processes.
- Contribute ideas for new products, features, and technology improvements; evaluate emerging technologies and industry trends relevant to motor controls and industrial automation.
- Participate in strategic product planning and roadmap discussions; identify opportunities to improve performance, manufacturability, reliability, and cost competitiveness.
- Provide technical guidance for product selection, application development, and troubleshooting; assist sales with understanding product capabilities and customer requirements.
- Engage in customer discussions, technical presentations, and application reviews as needed to support effective solutions.
- Collaborate with engineering, operations, manufacturing, quality, sales, suppliers, and customers to achieve project goals and communicate technical information clearly to diverse audiences.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
- 3+ years of experience in electronic circuit and PCB design.
- Experience developing and/or modifying software and embedded firmware.
- Strong understanding of analog and power electronics design principles.
- Familiarity with power semiconductor devices including SCRs, Triacs, MOSFETs, and IGBTs.
- Experience troubleshooting electronic circuits and embedded systems.
- Knowledge of motor control systems and industrial electronic products.
- Understanding of UL requirements and product safety standards.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail; capable of managing multiple projects independently.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work autonomously in a collaborative environment.

Pay
Salary range: $75,000.00 – $125,000.00 per year
