Location: Chicago, IL 60603

This posting describes responsibilities and qualifications for a senior electrical engineering role focused on transmission line design across high voltage ranges. The position involves hybrid work with in-office requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Design transmission lines in the voltage range from 69 kV up to 765 kV.
  • Mentor and train less experienced members of the design team.
  • Coordinate design activities to ensure installations and operations meet specifications, codes, and client requirements.
  • Prepare reports and studies that clearly present technical information and align with client needs and S&L formats.
  • Conduct independent reviews of work produced by others, including calculations, drawings, and transmission line models developed in PLS-CADD.
  • Adhere to Sargent & Lundy’s System of Processes.
  • This role follows a hybrid work schedule and requires in-office work three days per week.

Qualifications

Essential skills and experience

  • BS degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program.
  • 12 years of transmission design experience.
  • Proficiency with PLS-CADD software.
  • Experience including preparation of scopes of work, development of conceptual designs, determination of design basis, selection of equipment and materials, and the preparation and compilation of calculations and specifications.
  • Experience collaborating with clients on transmission lines from 69 kV through 500 kV.
  • Knowledge of engineering standards such as NESC, IEC, ASCE, ACI, IEEE, and ANSI.
  • Experience reviewing design drawings produced by others.

Valued but not required

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification
  • Construction experience
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS

Leaders in these roles often oversee automation and process improvement initiatives, such as automating calculations, summarizing technical documents, or generating design documentation, while determining when and how AI or agentic AI tools are applied and ensuring results are validated. Supervising engineers who program or script (for example, Python, MATLAB, or advanced Excel) to automate engineering tasks is valued, though not required. Additional learning in computer science, artificial intelligence, software engineering, or related fields is encouraged to enable effective oversight of automation-enabled engineering workstreams.

Compensation and Transparency

Compensation Range: $131,960.00 - $205,330.00
