Embedded Software Engineer
Job Description
Unitron, LP is seeking an Embedded Software Engineer to support the design and development of requirements, specifications, and embedded software for AC and DC power conversion products. This onsite role in Dallas, TX focuses on low-level application development, firmware debugging, integration, and verification in a lab environment, including work that spans both early evaluation boards and new custom hardware.
You will contribute as an individual contributor and as part of an engineering team building state-of-the-art AC and DC power conversion systems in the 3.5 to 250 kVA range. The position includes building and maintaining embedded “bare metal” software, creating maintainable designs, and participating in system integration and test activities.
What you will do
- Gather design requirements from documentation and, at times, informal communication
- Develop requirements, software system/subsystem designs, and design specifications
- Program in C for embedded processors
- Write embedded code for TI DSPs and Microchip PIC processors
- Develop software for target environments without an operating system (“bare metal”)
- Use PC-based IDEs including Microchip MPLAB and Texas Instruments Code Composer Studio
- Work with evaluation boards from chip manufacturers before full hardware is available
- Collaborate with hardware engineers to debug issues during board bring-up for new custom boards
- Integrate and test in a lab environment, tracking and resolving software issues
- Debug and troubleshoot firmware using common electronic test equipment
- Maintain and extend legacy code
- Design user interfaces
- Support production test by resolving technical problems
- Develop built-in-self-test code in firmware where practical
- Assist with defining, checking, and debugging new hardware designs
- Become familiar with the existing aerospace and marine product line
- Provide telephone support for field service personnel on an as-needed basis
- Use version-control software for software configuration control
- Use Microsoft Word and Excel as part of daily work
- Generate requirements and develop a plan for system integration and design validation
- Adjust to changing requirements and determine software priorities aligned with product development schedules
- Create simple, highly maintainable software designs and deliver high-quality code efficiently
- Integrate and test code with the ability to resolve software issues without close supervision
- Participate comfortably in a team environment through the system test stage
Required qualifications
- BS degree in computer science, computer engineering, or electrical engineering from an ABET accredited institution
- At least 3 years of experience in a related field
- Documented US citizenship or legal permanent resident status
